Very light but very long periods on the pill

I've only just got on the pill so I started taking it on day 1 of my period. It's now day 12 and I've still got my period. My periods beforehand were normally 5 or 6 days so I duno what's going on as I thought the pill was supposed to make your periods shorter. Even though my period's been very long the flow is very light like the flow from my normal day 5 or 6. What's going on with me and what should I do?

It's probably 'breakthrough bleeding' rather than a real period. It takes a few weeks for your body to get used to being on the pill, so stick with it for a while and it will probably settle down.

If the bleeding is heavy or you get really worried, you can always call the clinic or GP surgery for some advice.

How long do you reckon it'll last for?
I'm still bleeding and in a couple of days I finish the packet so I'm meant to bleed then which'll mean I've been bleeding continuosly for 28 days!!
Also apart from the fact that I'm worried that I'm guna like bleed to death this is getting REALLY annoying. I went on the pill so I could enjoy safe sex but I'm not getting any cos of the bleeding! D'oh!

I know what you mean, this exact same thing has happened to me. 28 days solid I was bleeding for, it's a bugger isnt it? Especially since I started taking it for the same reason as you - safe sex, but no sex of any kind is being had because of the bleeding. Raaa....
