Dealing but not real drugs

Where does the law stand on someone who is caught dealing, but it turns out to be fake, for want of a better example, caught selling say coke to someone but it's actually sugar.

Just something I've always wondered, can you be done for 'intent to supply' or something like that?

    If you sell somebody sugar pretending it to be coke, you can be done for supplying class A drugs.

    That's why if you ever get busted with drugs never admit to what they are, because they may not always be what you think.

    good advice. see law reports - R v Shivpuri

    in this case, the accused was a 'mule' for harmless vegetable leaves but believed them to be heroin. He was convicted of attempting to supply class A drugs.
