I heard 30 billion. He'd be a cunt not to give it away, what the fuck would you do with all that money? Just give most of it to people who need it cos you don't and neither do your family.

id buy a few islands, set up my own country with my own laws and army and buy in an entire population of pornstars and just have everything be free so all they had to do all day was have sex with one another and me and then have cameras evrywhere filming it all 24/7 and showing live on th enet for free! Thats what i would do with $30Billion!!!

Or you know...Party 24/7 and blitz myself!

    I would fund a revolution.

Or purchase some land in Texas, a trailer, set myself up and donate the rest.

    I like how Gates thinks.

He's stepping down from his microsoft position to invest more time in his charities. If anyone has the cash to fix something, it's ol' Bill.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
It's not about the cash, it's about how you use it...
I like Gates' vision on how to change the world. Wish there was a way to get involved, to be honest.

Well that much would pay Chelsea players' salaries for at least a couple of months.

Maybe they could next make a gesture of kindness. Or our other greedy, overpaid footballers.

Is it just me or is it always easy to tell the self-made billionaires from the people born with a silver spoon in their mouth? They seem to know the actual value of money. Imagine asking Paris Hilton to donate most of her money to charity.

I like what Gates is doing to help research into developing malaria drugs.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Warren Buffett, a bloody genius. Was well pleased to hear of this today. The news said it was about 85% of his wealth.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Gates' charity spends more resources on AIDs and malaria research than some countries. This latest donation will bring the total money put into the foundation to something like $50billion

Clearly he's trying to atone for the sins of windows 98 ;)

I've never understood the super-super-super rich. An individual simply cannot spend those kind of vast sums of money so the logical thing to do is give it away. Even a fraction of that would sustain any (sensible) relatives for hundreds of years. It just seems such a waste to build up fortunes like that while people in his own country and beyond go without the basics.

On the other hand, I'd say everyone here would like that amount of money to spend on whatever causes they think are right, rather than relying on the government to make the decisions for them.

Its no where near as simple as that, they dont just have a bank account with $20bn sitting in it, they own companies, and if you want the controlling share then you have to have 51% of the shares, ergo you need to have that much money.

What this donation is isnt really money as such, its assets and shares which Gates can use to fund research, its not a big cheque.

its nice to hear that money is going where its needed for a change
i heard bill gates is going to leave the vast majority of his fortune to charity.
Of course his kids get set up with a few million but i'm sure they'd be fine. :p

most billionaires keep it ...leave it to family etc.
gates has said there is no way one man can need the ammount of money he has amassed in a very short time.
he plans on leaving only a small amount to his kids.
he says he has been pondering for a while how he can give back all the money he has made ...to those who need it more than he does.
    it makes a refreshing change.

most like to hord it and try and get further up the rich list, the fact that the guy donated 80% of his wealth shocks me that he is keeping 20% his family still doesn't need that much (still 7.5 million), but it does set a precident and hopefully more will realise that they dont need all that money, i have a really low wage but do my best to donate and buy Fairtrade products which is a longer term solution to poverty and disease!

    (still 7.5 million)
    Billion?

What I've heard is that he intends to give each of his kids $10 million, then just leave the rest to charity. Seems sensible, since no-one really needs more that $10m.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
doesn't need that much (still 7.5 million), !
seven and a half million dollars is no lponger a lot of money.

yeah it is, thats enough for a 4 bed house, bills and food for a good few years and holidays, and thats without a job, admitedly it won't get you a private jet and a mansion, but do really need those latter two!

The other generous billionaire is Warren Buffet, the second richest man in the world.

This guy has more money than everyone on the face of the planet except Bill Gates, yet he STILL lives in the $31,500 house that he bought in 1958 when he hardly had a penny to his name.

He's not your average guy and he's not the average billionaire either.

I thought the Ikea man was the second richest man in the world?
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I'm with the bible on this one. I'm much more impressed by someone on the dole giving 1% of their income to charity than by a billionaire giving away 85% of theirs.

Admittedly, I'm slightly more impressed with Buffet - he gave his money away to someone else to give away, rather than

It's not about how much money he gives though, it's about the amount of time and effort he puts into his charity work. It's also slightly more refreshing than rich celebrities asking everyone else to donate money, and at the same time giving themselves a bit of much needed publicity (*cough* Live8 *cough*).Yes it's easy to be generous when you're that rich, but would you rather have him like the majority of rich billionaires who sit on their fortune, and maybe donate the odd million to make it seem like they care.
