Erm...in grown hair question.

Basically, i have had ingrown hairs before and they are easy to deal with, coax them loose and tweezer them out. Or dig them out.

But, i had one and dug it out and plucked it, no problems, pretty typical, but now the skin has gone hard around the area. Has this happened to anyone else?

Is it a particularly dry area? This is just a guess but you probably damaged the skin a tad when you dug it out.

Have a long hot soak in the bath as this will soften up the skin and encourange the hair out, then squeeze/pluck etc to try and get the hair out. This will also hurt a lot less after a hot bath.

Alternatively, go to see your practice nurse at your GP's surgery who will be able to get it out
