Well I wouldn't want you to be disappointed when you get there. Expect it to be shit from the start and then you won't be disappointed. Anything else is a bonus.

Ok so I don't like uni and am finding it a bit shit, that's no reason why you should too. Hopefully this term will be a bit better because I have some people I can go and see that are nothing to do with York or Uni.

That being said. I love uni, and I don't know many people who don't love uni, KHSS is right though, don't get your hopes up to high, take it one day at a time. If it's awesome, it's awesome and great, if it's not then... well it's not.

It isn't overhyped! And don't believe what anyone says about freshers' week not being what it used to be or some stupid shit like that. Uni is the best time I've had. Why not get excited?!

Because not everyone likes freshers week (for example) I hated the pressure to go out and get trashed every night for 16 days (as it was in my hall) I didn't start to really enjoy uni until well after the pressure had gone.

Uni can be extremely overhyped, sometimes you don't get on with your hallmates, or housemates, you've picked the wrong course and aren't good enough to get on the sports team, or you are but can't break into the cliques. Uni can be horrific.

Not to put it on a downer for him or anything??

I didn't go out every night. Quite a lot, but not all the time. As long as you make an effort to get to know people it doesn't matter if you don't socialise all the time.

for me freshers week was pants, half of the events were cancelled. my uni is shite for entertainments.

plus i didn't live in halls. if you live in halls and have a good entertainments committee at your uni you'll be fine!

You've got to be realistic. For me, for my brothers and sisters, for all but one friend it was awesome and everyone is doing fine, if not having a great time. But for some, it just sucks arse, and you can't deny that.

Well I don't really know anyone personally who's had a bad experience, apart from a girl in my halls who didn't like her course and left. So as far I know, people generally have a good time, but maybe there are a few people who don't. I don't mean to say you aren't right, it's just I personally can't imagine having a bad time at uni so I'm usually quite optimistic to people about it.

Ok, that's fine. I know one friend from school and two mates from uni who dropped out because they didn't like it. Two were because they outright hated it, and one was because he didn't like his course but loved loughborough.

You can't just say that uni is awesome though, because it's not, and by doing that people who aren't having a good time will often think they're odd because they don't like it.

Uni is hard work, it's exhausting, you end up thrown together with random people, some you'll like and some you'll hate, some will be selfish pigs and some will help you out. Most people who go to uni like it, because most people are going because that's what they really want to do, not because it's something they've been pressured to. But I remain convinced that the first 6 weeks are the hardest, and when you're ok then, you'll be ok all the way 99.9% of the time.

I had a rough time at the start of uni, but I can't imagine being anywhere else now. because it's great, it's the most awesome thing ever, I'm at my most content now, never have I been more consistantly ok, never have I had such regularly awesome days, such utter highs and such a wide range of completely awesome friends. Uni is the best thing ever right now, but it's not all roses and it's not like that for everyone, I think I'm one of the blessed ones.

Well suppose its nice to hear a mixture of stuff here but i guess its different for us all. I'll just have to wait and see.

I'm sure you'll be fine mate, it's great to look forward to it, but don't expect it to be a land flowing with milk and honey or anything.

I don't think University is all its made out to be.

I didn't enjoy my first year. That was probably down to a few personal issues though I was dealing with at the time.

I can't remember my Freshers weeks for some reason  It was only a year ago...
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
    Miserable gits! :p

I have absolutely loved Uni, though the rose-tinted glasses have definitely come out since I'm so close to being back in the real world now.

I've met some reet madheads and nutters and the odd highly intelligent person too. Always good for pissed up, 4am arguments or mutual adoration societies. I can't imagine what I'd be like if I hadn't had the experiences I have had here, though it's definitely true that different people get different things out of the University experience... and some more than others.

Freshers week was insane by all accounts, though the only part I actually remember is lying down in the middle of a taxi rank at the end of the night with one of my flatmates screaming (it'd be wrong to claim it was singing) I Wanna Be Sedated. Loved it.

Have fun, GoodFella, and make the most of it all! :D

Uni's the best, making new friends, going out getting trashed, joinin new sports teams whats not to love
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
    I agree with Fiend_85.

I'm finishing my first year and it's been OK; some people will love it - others loathe. In Fresher's Week there was far too much pressure to go out and "have the time of your life". It depends on the person really, but I ended up leaving 6 days in because I found days of doing nothing but getting thrashed each night immensley boring.

When uni started it was quite lonely, but as time gradually progressed I found my feet and now it's a nice break away from home. I suspect it will get better in second and third year and I'm definitely going to make more of an effort.

Yes, I'm looking forward to uni too - thought I was the only one! I am really worried too, it all seems a bit scary and I'm not building up my expectations in case it's not that great, but yeah, I can't wait either! :p

    Where you off to?
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru

It was the only uni I applied to, I had my heart set on the course!! (creative studies)

What course are you doing at Aston?
My ex goes to Bangor, watch out for him. He's the arrogant one with the long hair and the Wavesport EZ whitewater kayak.

What will you be studying there?
    ETA, oops, just seen

Nooo! I'm only just reaching the end of my first year, but uni is guid!!!

Fresher's week was more than I thought it would be (having been told be some people that it was a bit lame).

Uni is what you want it to be. So be excited! Make friends! Go to all the themed parties! Go to the frisbee time first meeting for the banter! Do it all!

    Yas...
