anyone else find that their replies just dont come up? it seems in some topics im destined neva to reply again, ever had that?

ive cleared cookies, temp and history but still plays up...nightmare

    This happens to me all the time.

    I've found that, once you've posted a reply, if it doesn't appear, just refresh the page a couple of times and eventually it'll appear.

    Don't post again, though, because, even though you can't see it, it's still there!!

    hehe i just replied to your multiple replies in sex MD.. yeah try refreshing, try holding down CTRL and refreshing... and if all else fails, add a "?" at the end of the URL and press enter. it works, bizarrely.

    yes, well done girl-from-mars for discovering that all on your own..

    i usually find that it only works if i put a ? and some other text after it, although your mileage obviously varies.

    its hardly something exclusive to you, id done something similar with # and #top on my livejournal recently to try and get it formatted properly coz ive been having probs with it.

    and the exact same tip about adding a question mark, or in fact ?textofyourchoice was mentioned in this magazine i read today that my dad got, the webuser thing which seems to be a spin off from computeractive. and it wasnt your name at the bottom of who supplied it so you no longer have copyright over that particular tip <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/tongue.gif"&gt;

    lets not "fight" in my thread now, im protective of ma threads y'know <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/wink.gif"&gt;

    the reason you need a "?" at the end is all to do wiv the ISP caching the page and it doesnt get updated by the web server. as a ? doesnt change the place where the server "looks" for data it basically makes the ISP server think it needs to go back to the webserver instead of using the cache

    little note for the admin of the sites...instead of sniffing <passes a tissue> <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/wink.gif"&gt; you could change the properties of the sites on the server so that the http tagging expires immediately, in theory getting rid of any caching the ISP server may do...

    if i thought it was a bad site i wouldnt have joined, it was just annoyin...dnt take what i say too seriously <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/wink.gif"&gt;

    MD is mostly right.

    I got this idea from that very principle. I've been working very closely with the support staff for ntl over the past few months. It became noticeable that a number of customers were experiencing the problem of websites not being updated, due to the web proxy that ntl employs.

    I asked if ALL http traffic was directed through this proxy, and was informed that it was, except for cgi requests, which passed straight through. This is where i got the idea to make the proxy think i was making a CGI request...

    My previous web development experience told me that CGI parameters were passed by using a question mark ('?') in the URL. I decided that putting this character on the end of a URL, without passing any parameters, would probably convince the proxy it was a CGI request, without confusing the web server too much... i did, and it worked. I shared this information with ntl tech support, and the ntl newsgroups. From here, the word got around, and this is probably how it ended up in Emma's magazine.

    When I first noticed the non-refreshing problems on thesite, i initially thought it was caused by ntl's proxy again, so i tried the same method, with no joy. This led me to believe that the problem was not with ntl's proxies. I tried the same method again, but this time I actually put parameters after the ? (nonsense ones, ignored by thesite). This worked.

    I posted this workaround in Anything goes, and also in an instant message to Girl-From-Mars... and now everyone's trying to claim ownership of it!

    well i knew how it worked, causing the browser to re-access a new copy of the page from the server rather than going through proxies, without going into NEARLY as much technical detail <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif"&gt;

    and i dont want ownership of your damn fix ffs, i was just sharing it with people, i didnt think you were gonna be THAT protective over it...

    oh and FYI this guy (on page 40 of Webuser magazine <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/tongue.gif">) from castle gate (wherever that might be) appears to have figured it out for himself after using ebay and the auctions not being updated. all you need is a leeeeetle bit of knowledge of proxies and caching and its simple to work out. but yes, you WERE the one who told me, but i dont think you can really claim ownership of the thing across the whole internet <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/rolleyes.gif"&gt; <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/wink.gif"&gt; <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/biggrin.gif"&gt; <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/tongue.gif"&gt;

    ........but what u havent all said is that it can b easily fixed by using special code (i think it cud b unique to coldfusion, all i know is that my brother has it) that can generate a random set of numbers after the url and so it "fools" the cache into thinking the page is a new one and so updates every time

    can be seen working at http://shop.sidc.co.uk go and order something and change the quantity in ur basket it updates the url wiv a random set of numbers
