I've read a lot about the ending to the original 'Planet of the apes' - something to do with the statue of liberty. Can someone explain what happened?

he actually found out it was where he came from.

He was riding along the beach and comes upon the half buried statue of liberty and he finally realises that the planet of the apes is really earth..
