Just watched the movie 'Master and Commander' and its a great film but it got me annoyed when you know the truth about it, yet again it british history has been distorted by hollywood. In the film (set in like 1800's) the British capture a great French destroyer and it seems it is a very embarrising deafeat for the French, but actually in reality it wasnt a French ship, but an American ship.. wey what a surprise. There are loads of other examples like this such as U-571 where its the AMERICANS that capture a german submarine and get the 'engima machine' which helps greatly to winning the war, but again in reality it was the British not the Americans. Another example could be Saving Private Ryan where it excludes all British and other allied troops making it seem that it was just the Amercians that won the war. There should be laws on this sorta thing, as now all children/adults who dont know much about history (only get what they know from films) will think that Americans have a great history (which they dont, they're just stealing ours). Damn Yanks. :grump:

Well I would like to find out more about the combat. All we ever hear about it suicide bombings. Never about the fact that troops are under fire most days, etc etc. Just perhaps about the life of a soldier in Iraq, that would be interesting. Obviously if it was completely biased then it wouldn't be as good though.
I read that the person Hollywood based their story on was actually a racist rapist, but instead they made the brits out to be the bad guys, e.g. setting a church on fire with people in it etc..

Fuck knows, I wouldn't be remotely surprised though as any recent film involving that loon Mel Gibson probably hasn't touched base with reality for long.
I just could not believe how categorically deluded and ignorant the people who made it were of history - perverting battles, characters to make their country seem infallible. Ugh.
They could've made an interesting film, featuring the good and bad of both sides...the truth, gritty and unpleasant watching as it may've been. But like a lot of Hwood films it was puff piece with one foot firmly planted in the Propaganda camp. Why on earth would we expect anything less? :crazyeyes
And btw "Patriots" British and American alike...WW2 was won byt the Russian Communists at the Battle of Kursk...aww tough luck
and in the war in the pacific, twas those russian storm troopers that did all the island hopping.
Lol I'm not saying the allies (Britain and American) done their part but the fact is that the real war was being fought on the Eastern Front and Stalin was the person who ultimately defeated the Germans. America just hijacked the occassion because it was a sign that Capitalism was better than Communism.

Depends what you mean by communism but for the traditional sense...over 70 years mate and they definately won WW2...but most wouldn't know that...such is the illusion created by the capitalist west that "we won the war" :rolleyes:
However I will never believe that Russia was ever a communist state, or anyother state for that matter.
Neither do I...there's never been a proper communist state in history.
Our own history lessons tend to gloss over the terrible atrocities committed by the British empire. I suppose everyone likes to forget the darker areas of their past.

Indeed. But it's one thing to gloss over it. Quite another to be out there making films blantently distorting history and making up stories as if they were fact. It was such an awful, awful film - bemusing that the two leads are Aussies.
There's no way it's only the US that does that kind of thing, you're right. But that is what this thread was about.
