Tessa and hubby's murky money

At the moment, there's some pretty murky stuff going on regarding David Mills, the husband of our Culture Secretary. (though that is a contradiction in terms) He's basically accused of taking bribes from Silvio Berlusconi. Now it's emerged there's some kind of financial business with his wife as well.

No bribe, nothing to see here: Details
Tessa denies wrongdoing: Details

It all seems very suspicious, though we must remember no one has been convicted of any wrongdoing. This may all be innocent and proper, we don't know. But it all seems very fishy to me. Where are the cries from the likes of Aladdin of "SLEAZE!"? If this had anything to do with the Tories, half of you would be screaming until the air turned blue about it. I wish I knew why everyone, including the media, gives such an easy time to Labour about sleaze that rivals that of the last Tory government...

Over to you.
Beep boop. I'm a bot.

<strike>New Labour</strike> Sorry, I refuse to even call them labour these days. Generic Middle Ground Party one is Sleaze Shocker!

It doesn't supprise me. Anothe to go with Fingers off to the EU Parliament, maybe? Perhaps people will vote them out this time? Although, what options do we have? Maybe better the devil you know... New Right Labour. New Left Tories. Pointless Lib Dems...

Eugh. Someone please update the parties so they don't all occupy the middle ground, and try to be all things to all men. It's wearing thin.

Not really surprising, money scandals are generally the preserve of Labour politicians; sex scandals traditionally being more a Tory thing – although lately the LibDems.

Jowell has probably done something wrong and I think the press can prove that but are letting her sweat a bit longer. She’ll probably survive though, she’s a ‘Blairite’ and since there not particularly common amongst Labour MPs now I can’t see her going anywhere while Blair’s PM. Still, if the press turn up the heat and there’s more to come she’ll be in trouble. Ditto with Ruth Kelly if she appears in the eyes of the public and press to mess up again.

Yes, it's interesting to see people other than Tory MPs being caught with their pants down... :p

Ruth Kelly's got more than enough on her plate with the new Education Bill about to be published. It's one of few things I've supported the Government on, though the bill is likely to go nowhere near as far as I'd like to see.

As for Tessa - why am I calling her by her first name? - she's not the worst minister in government. Culture department's not an easy one to be in, she does fairly well in her brief. See, even I can be nice towards ministers from time to time.

No, I'm not drunk, people... :p

But... you are being nice to the current government! :p TBH, I'd say put Prescott in charge - he has it all. Corruption, Experience, "Fuck Off" attitude - I think he'd probably be great.

    Best thing he's ever done.

Best thing New Labour ever did in government. And it's a very empty list, as we know. :p

    Surprise, surprise! Tessa's been cleared.

Not by a proper inquiry, that is, but by the Cabinet Secretary, who reports to Tony Blair, who himself is desperate to make sure questions are not asked about his friendship to Berlusconi. Yes, as with all New Labour enquiries, it leaves no stone turned. The smell of sleaze has suddenly got a whole lot stronger...

LABOUR POLITICIAN GETS AWAY WITH FRAUD AND CORRUPTION SHOCKER!!!

And you'll still get all these dozy twats who vote for them. The fact that Blair is PM makes me realise, once and for all, that the masses are total and irrevocable asses.

The interesting thing is that if there be any real justice, this scandal should reverberate all the way to Berlusconi as well, corrupt criminal scumbag that he has ever been.

Well, since Sir Gus O'Hutton, sorry, O'Donnell cleared Tessa of any wrongdoing, some little anomalies have been pointed out. How did he do, in 72 hours, what Italian prosecutors are still doing over 4 years later? Either we have a cabinet secretary who works with breathtaking speed, or someone's fobbing us off.

Peter Kilfoyle, one of few Labour MPs who has any integrity is calling on her to resign whilst Tory Nigel Evans called the report a "whitewash". ::Details::

The Conservative Party should be having a field day. It should be relishing this fine opportunity to expose New Labour as a government as sleazy as the last Tory one. Bernie Ecclestone, the Hinduja Brothers, Peter Mandelson, (twice) Geoffrey Robinson, Lord "Smallpox" Drayson, the Millenium Dome, the deals with American casinos, Cheriegate and now Tessa Jowell, all of them up to their necks in sleaze.

So, are the Tories leading in the polls, and making the Government look like a complete laughing stock? If only. No, they're too busy telling Scottish Tories (hardly a Tory heartland, is it?) about ending poverty. Isn't there a Government to humiliate and embarrass here? Nah, let's talk some stuff about what we're not going to do about world poverty... :: Details ::

And they wonder why nobody votes anymore.

I meant to post this 2 days ago when the news broke but didn't get to...

Was anyone else utterly repulsed by the accusations by the (right wing) press that Tessa Jowell had only split from her husband ''as a cynical ploy to save her career'' or that the split was ''staged''?

Not to mention their hardly-contained joy at taking and publishing photographs of a crying David Mills and a red-eye Jowell, and rethorical questions of ''how much more will she be able to take before she quits'' [which translates as ''lets push her for as long as it takes until we manage to get rid of her].

I know the press has no regard of the concept of presumption of innocence, and that they are happy to bypass all official investigations and findings when they have made up their mind about someone or have it in for them, but this time they had reached new depths.

For that reason alone I hope Ms Jowell stays in her post for many years to come, and that the nasty publications in question go fuck themselves.
