Any *old school* goths out there?! I mean anyone like me who's old enough to remember Goth the first time round....bands like Sisters Of Mercy, etc..?

Sisters Of Mercy are ok, I mean I'm not a huge fan but they're alright.
What kind of era are you talking?
Best days ever grooving down the banshee in manchester. Going to see the sisters of Mercy, knowing all the words to all the Bauhaus songs. Fab Goth Boyfriend, BLACK BLACK BLACK!
Gave it up in 92 when the square club in Cardiff closed, and I got a job.

If there's anything more important than my ego around here, i want it caught and shot now
anyways, i think the gothic "culture" that seems today to inspire misery and such is a misnomer. the goths were reasonably happy people. the darkness traditionally asocciated with gothics is very wrong, considering one look at gothic architecture tells u they're all about light.
anywyas, people make mistakes. i'm sure u'll grow out of it.

But look, she is 32 and has been a goth for 14 years (I think), she's hardly gonna grow out of it.
It's like pointing at someone and saying "Hey, look!! You're a male..but it's ok, you'll grow out of it..."
See?
How stupid!!
but i'd be interested to hear your arguments. i merely said that to culture ani and others partake in a) seems to inspire misery in many people and b) is a bit of a misnomer.
all other comments were snide and pointless. argue, im intereted.

I was into Bob Dylan before I was a Goth so there we go.
I'm 32 next year so I guess that makes me old too
Then I started taking acid and ecstasy and got into rave...and the rest is history...
Nah, that was *angst*

In other words you saw the light..
Each to their own although personally I like to look a little smart. Couldn't be without Ben Sherman, Henri Lloyd, Levi's and a nice pair of white classics.
erm, no. It makes you sad, but not a goth.
Ive got a theory (uh oh) - Most people (myself included) keep their darker tendencies and desires inside, this can cause a bit of unhappiness as uve gotta keep all these things in. Goths however, 'wear' their darker side on their sleeve and so have nothing to keep inside and are therefore happier people.
Looking back on that theory its a load of crap!
ah well, another day, another opportunity to say something stupid.
I respect them for wot they do.
Same here. I myself couldn't give two shits
Personally I'm as colourful, loud and opposite to them as you can get...
Different people make the world a more interesting place...
Gothic... cool? No, they are the kids that got bullied in school and don't go to the school disco, thats not cool. I think thats the opposite to the view most goths actually want anyway.
They do care what people think, everybody does. They just pretend not to care, like it's below them. As REM's Mr Stipe would sing, "...everybody hurt's ...sometimes".
They are individual? Right, thats goths, always unique. Theres only one goth. Being a goth is as conformist as wearing a damn uniform.
Just before you all get up in arms, I realise this is a stereotypical view, but stereotypes are often based upon common factors shared by most individuals in any given group. I don't care if you are a goth or not... I'm not part of that scene and am thus liable to pass critical judgement upon it. I am not slating any particular individuals.
Which are?
