How to remove a blackhead?

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Hello,

I've just changed to a better daily facial routine which reduces the amount of oil on my face which should hopefully lower the chance of getting blackheads in the future. However, i still have a couple of small onces on my face...does anyone have any advice on the best method to remove them?

I do a bit of steaming (about 1/2 a week) and I don't really have any facial specialists near me.

Has anyone got any effective methods please? :chin:

Thank you.

A bobby pin? Just kidding, thats gross.

I dont know if you have the brand clean and clear there, but they have a facial scrub that is designed for blackheads. They also have an astrengent for that too. Those are excelent. Failing that, look for a facial scrub that is... a scrub. As in they have those little beady things that scratch around your face. I'm sure if you look nearly every brand of product will have a specific black head line.

Steam your face and then use the blackhead remover that you get in The Body Shop, is usually kept with the tea tree stuff

Oh, a hardening facial mud mask, those work too.

My dad was a bastard for it. He used to get a piece of toilet paper and just forcibly remove it using his fingers, I used to scream like a bitch.

He should have used a bobby pin ;)which is this by the way because i'm going out on a limb here and guessing that you may use a different word for it than I.

I think we use the same word. Not that I've ever felt the need to go buy one or nothing.

I think you could do your hair really pretty with them. ;)
Other than that, I'm shit out of information for this thread.

Biore nose pore strips are excellent for blackheads.

I get mine from e-bay all the way from Japan but you can get them in Boots. And there are similar ones that are a bit cheaper (the biore ones are £8 for 6 on the high street but you can get them for a fraction of this online).

I've always called those things "hair grips", never heard them called a bobby pin before. Over here bobby is slang for policeman though so now I'm left wondering if there is a link :chin:

    I call them kirby grips.

Me too. Hair grips are a bit different to me.

Those strip things are quite good though.

Some brands are better than others. The biore ones are particularly good. And you have to follow the instructions properly, no taking it off before its completely dry etc.

Just leave them, unless there are huge, there is little point.

Its dirt trapped in your skin, isn't that reason enough to be rid of them? Would you leave dirt in your fingernails?

Have you considered a face transplant?

    :D

Personally, to answer the actual question, I only do something if they become unsightly...

If you steam your face to open your pores up, then use a face mask (I use Boots Botanics pore perfecting clay mask). Remove that with warm water and then apply a pore removing strip to the area immediately afterwards. Leave that until it dries and you might find that gets rid of a few. Probably not a great idea if you have really sensitive skin though.

I have loads on my chin, I get rid of some and then more appear, it is a nightmare.

    It is NOT dirt!

Blackheads are a type of acne. It is cause by that over production of sebum [oil] in the skin. This along with cells and bacteria plugs the pore and then oxidises giving it the black colour.

    Well then...
Its bacteria, oil and flat out nasty in your skin. Would you leave dirt in your fingernails? ;)

And I still stick by my Clean and Clear makes the best black head oriented scrub and astrengent. I think its been literally years since I've had one. Use the astrengent every day, prevention.

Still pretty grim. I'd rather get rid of them.

It made my skin very red and agrevated my acne. But I guess if your skin is not too sensitive it'd be ok.

I'm naughty I squeeze. I know I shouldn't but I do. I've left them alone for a month but my nose now looks dirty-maybe its in my mind. I may go check my lil tin of beauty things to see if I can find a strip-feel like doing one tonight after reading this! Should come out pretty gross after being left so long! hehe

is it just me or does anyone else get a big feeling of satisfaction when the strips are full of gunk?!

That's weird, I have very sensitive skin and I find it really good for me. It's a lot gentler than so many other scrubs I've used. You have to be quite gentle with it though, and not just scrub at your face like it's sandpaper. I guess it just depends what ingredients you're sensitive to - this one just seems to work for me somehow.
