Iv been playing on-line Poker with money for about 2 weeks now.

I started with a lunch time game once a week at work (in person obviously)
One of the players is a very clever guy who's been playing for years
occasionaly wins at the Casino games, he won the first 5 games, after about another 5 games I started wining, have won the last 4 of 6, but it looks like we wont be doing the lunch time games again.

So I started playing online for free, lost my first 4 amounts of play money (you get a thousand each time) after a couple of weeks I had 36,000 play chips in my account, so I thought Id play for money.

Put $50 into an online accountat one point I had $150 but then lost it due to playing reclusly whilst drunk.

So I put another 50 in lost some was down to $8 decided maybe I shouldn play the same way, so I started taking care (this was monday I made this decision)
am now up tp $40, not much but I spent time watching the players who won.

I knew Id loose my first investment but wish I hadnt been so recless when I had $150 in my account. Im not sying Im goint to win loads or be a professional player but with carefull rule following I will try to turn a profit, if not I wont spend more that $50 a month, seems resonable to me.

how to win, rules Iv made

1. fold most hands, its worth paying the big blind to see the flop but only sometimes, a chance this as it could be re-rased.

2. only re-raise (or call a raise) before the flop with good cards (pair 8's or higher, Ace,King or Ace Queen) or sometimes with any pair.

3. Dont go all in on a high pair, this is how I lost the 150 realy need 2 pair of 3 of a kind to take big risks.

4. Bluffing works but the point is by bluffing if you win you win little if you lose you lose big, sometimes you have to a bit to make out your a bluffer so you might get called with a good hand

5., there are a few bluffers who will go in and lose big find a good game with these sorts of players, maybe make a few small bluffs then try to get called when you have a good hand, other games are too cautious people will only call when they have a great hand.

6. If you have a great hand try and check and make others bet for you (this is why it helps to be playing with bluffing risk taking players)

Patience is the key fold till you have a good hand.

There' been countless books made on the subject, I like to dabble in a bit of poker myself...good craic when your pissed with your mates or whatever. Yeh I agree with those points, it's hard though to apply them in a real situation cos there's a lot of things going through your head and sometimes you make a stupid decision.
