Special Needs Children

Does anyone here work with special needs children or know someone who does ? I really wanna do this for a career but I don't know what qualifications you need or anything. I'm doing an advanced GNVQ in health and social care at college because when I enrolled they said it was good for my chosen career but so far I don't really see what relevance it has.

    Over the summer I worked as a volunteer at a playscheme for disabled children.
    There were children there who had down syndrome, seribul pausy, children who were just mentally years younger than they physically were, ortistic children, epileptics, a blind boy and children in wheelchairs. There were more conditions than this that were catered for but these are just some that I remember.

    A little boy called mark who had the mental age of 7 but was 10 and in a wheelchair fell in love with me and used to tell me he loved me everyday and that he wanted to marry me.
    He would draw me pictures all day and make me badges which I have kept.
    There was a blind boy, I cant remember his name he was only there for a few days but he used to sit in the ball pool and sing on the karaoke and a lot of us woul den dup crying and running out of the room because it was so touching.

    I cried my eyes out when I had finished there. It was so fulfilling to see them smile and play with you when usually they would be cooped up at home with nothing to do. I cant explain how it makes you feel. It is a very emotional job but very satisfying too. I think if you choose to do this for a career you will enjoy it.

    Good Luck!

    I have been thinking about going into this sort of career for a while now and since i replied to your message I have thought about it a lot. I remembered how happy I was in the summer and I have decided to pursue this kind of career, what have we got to lose eh. If I find anything out I'll put it up on here!

    You can get experience for this kind of thing just by starting out helping with voluntary organisations like the Winged Fellowship Trust. They're at www.wtf.org.uk

    You can't actually help on their holidays for special needs children straight away I don't think because children are considered to be vulnerable, and also more tiring probably <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif">. But there's lots of other links there you can use to get started at looking around.

    If I remember I'll try and get a friend of mine to give me some info or put it up here (he's a headmaster at a school for children with special needs and helps with various charities in the area as well). P.S. If you remind me I'm more likely to remember. <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif"&gt;
