Work Experience

I'm supposed to be organising my yr 11 Work Experience placement at the mo, but I don't have a clue how to start. I think I want to do Medicine, but where could I go? Surely I won't be allowed to shadow a surgeon or GP, and I don't wanna do nursing, so I need inspiration!! Or if all else fails I could do a Law placement, but the only place I could go is the Crown Courts in Nottingham and as my mate is going there it won't be thought of very highly at school!!
What can you suggest??

There are definetely loads of word experience placements in the medical world. My friend did shadow a GP, you are allowed to do this, the GP asks the patients when they come in if they would mind. However the GP might want to meet you or interview you beforehand to see if you are suitable. You could write to your local hospital and ask them for any kind of work experience in a hospital environment...even if it's just really simple boring jobs. You would definetely be able to find some sort of medical work experience if you are the right sort of person ie. enthusiastic and willing to do anything. So don't rule it out if that's what you want to do in the future.

Yayness another potential medic! I did my year 10/11 work experience at a Chemist because I was too young for hospital placements, plus they prefer to take on people in college for w/e in hospitals (my friend did w/e when she was still at school and was snubbed by a few of the docs) If you decide to do something related to Law i.e non medical, be careful because at your interview you don't want them to ask you why you didn't apply for Law instead.
    Hope this helps

    Yeah, good choice.

I arranged some work experience at a local private hospital, and then got a p/t job there too, so it's definitely possible.

GP is a good idea because it will give you the opportunity to see many aspects of the job - from coughs and colds, to chronic disease, pregnancy, routine immunisations, and psychiatry. Even a morning with the practice nurse will be valuable experience.

Why not nursing? If it's the yuckiness that you don't like, then do you really want a career in medicine?
