Story

Again the "OMG VIDEO GAMES ARE BAD" Bandwagon. The game has the rating it has for a reason it shouldnt be corrupting youth techincally.... (coughhypocrticalcough) But i still fail to see what the big problem is. Something to blame out of control youngsters on i guess.

Opinions?

How do you get to the sexually explicit scenes? And can you get them in the previous two GTAs?

I'm purely interested from a techincal standpoint, :o

I find it amazing that they get more worked up over the sex than the violence...we live in sad times!

Typical American behavior though isn't it.

I didn't see Toadborg's link before I posted - think that sums it up perfectly

It does bother me when you think of all the racist/sexist/violent messages that seem pretty common in popular american music, film and tv as well as the fact that you can bet that any American kid under the age of 18 who has net access to get the patch for the game has probably downloaded countless pornos anyway and yet its still causing outrage

The violence barely gets a mention ... just the fact that previous games in the series have caused controvesey.

Do you get the feeling there running out of things to protest about GTA?

Not sure if it just the Americans who would react in this way. I would say that in Britain their is a very similar morality gap between attitudes to sex and to violence.........

    Yep.

As Sheila Broflovski put it so efficiently in South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut, senseless bloody violence it's okay so long as there are no naughty bits in it.

Like typical behaviour for Muslims is blowing people up? Hmm that would rightly be an unacceptable generalisation. If it's wrong to generalise about say Muslims why isn't it also wrong to also generalise about Americans?

Seriously you just make yourself look stupid and ignorant when you say stuff like that. America is so diverse; there is such contrast between say Alabama and Massachusetts, Texas and California or Mississippi and Michigan that it makes sweeping statements about Americans merely irrelevant.

Actually I think it is true to say its a typical reaction of Americans ... but I think whoever said that we're just as bad in Britain was right as well.

Political Correctness is a strange thing

The bandwagon is the same old, same old, but the issues in modding are actually quite interesting - after all if a game can be modded then how do you rate it? (It's worth remembering that this issue only applies to countries like the US and the ELSPA system where 17+ isn't the same as adult - in the UK the issues academic since it's 18 already under BBFC ratings)

As to the mod there is the major issue of where the content came from and the fact it was never shown to the bodies that regulate the industry -

    1. It's hidden but available - if the content was an easter egg (it wasn't) then not telling the regulatory body is a really serious problem - you can't withhold content to avoid a higher rating - if this had been the case then Rockstar could have been looking at court time.

    2. It's hidden and locked away, but made available. If Rockstar had locked away the old content (and you have to wonder how old content makes the final coding) but supplied information to mod makers on how to unlock it then they would be in serious trouble again.

    3. It's old, locked away content that they never expected anyone to be able to access. If this is the case Rockstar are just a bit liable for foolishness, but not deliberately trying to bypass the censors. This seems to be the most likely situation for Rockstar and there's a real legal issue here about whether the actions of a modder can be considered the responsibility of Rockstar.

    4. It's entirely invented content from the modder. Again a wierd legal issue - if someone invents new content (nude patch for DOA: Volleyball for example) is the company responsible, or is it just the same as dodgy hentai using Disney characters?

All in all quite an interesting issue for censors, one that's only going to get worse as time pass. There have already been some similar cases in the UK, for example the patch made available for Carmageddon that turned on the human victims and red blood rather than the zombies and green blood required by German censors, or the PG rated Rocky box set that had withdrawn and made 12 after the BBFC realised that every other word on the commentary was the director saying 'shit'.

On a Rockstar note though, remember that the controversy started with the original GTA game, a game that wasn't doing too well so Rockstar hired Max Clifford to start a 'ban this filth' campaign in the Daily Mail, to push sales. This is a company that excels in marketing, and this problem will only increase those sales.

It is wrong to suggest all or most ordinary Americans are like that of course.

However Renzo might have been referring to the authorities not ordinary people- remember that it is the politicians who are said to be kicking a big fuss about it.

And yes, it is a typical behaviour of American politicians- as well as the people in charge of giving movies their ratings, the TV stations and the opinion makers- to see nothing wrong with children and youngsters being exposed to all kinds of senseless violence and war and gun cultures, but kick a major fuss and talk about 'corruption of young minds' when even a glimpse of a nipple appears on daytime TV (remember the Superbowl bullshit?) or the word 'sex' flashes for 12 milliseconds on a Disney movie.

Talk about needing to sort out priorities...

Not true, recent outrage at the fact about 30 of the 50 or so state affliates of ABC - the ones who control regional broadcasting - edited or refused to show Saving Private Ryan for fear that the FCC would fine them on the spot for showing too much violence. The film was being shown as part of the VE day celebrations.

Oh, and they are trying to get FCC rules to apply to cable as well - so much for Deadwood, OZ and the rest.

If we're talking mods and sex - what about the Sims 2. I hear you can get all sort of mods to remove the censor patch and get sexy clothing for your female sims. Or so I've been told...

Fair enough, I didn't know that.

But still I find it pathetic that the gun and violence culture still does seem to get a far easier ride by censors in the US than sensual material does. Or that adults cannot watch a war movie on TV because the broadcasters fear they will be in trouble, come to think of it.

If I had to choose between my child watching a porn movie (let alone just a glimpse of a breast), or watching a violent movie/ being taken down to the shooting range for some macho gun wankfest, I know which one I'd rather they did.

Surely the wankfest would be for the porno option

as much as people say computer games are bad, how is it different from a film or something like that. Atleast with computer games, u can build logic etc.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
    It's only a computer game.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru

Games are proven to increase reaction times drastically and your observence of the world around you. Could make you a safer driver, although if you have any desire to do over 80mph on a public road... well.. meh. Think of the others you endanger. You don't care? I doubt games did that to you...
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Well they can't complain about violence anymore, so it's just something else to complain about, I guess.

That's the suggested speed on german motorways...

People just like to whinge. I'm waiting for GTA: Eminem vs marilyn manson, because hopefully all these old codgers will ahve a heart attack at it.

Well the next Rockstar game is Bully, but it's actually about a kid at school trying to defeat the bullies - though expect it to be covered in the press as a game about underage sex and bullying children.

Why can you have sex at 16 yet cannot buy porn or buy games with sexual content until you are older?

    i can phrase it better

you can have sex at the age of 16, but watching a film you make of you and your girlfriend having sex is both illegal to make and to watch until you are 18

You know some kid in germany killed loads of people - I think including loads of school kids and some people in a shopping centere - because he played too much CS and thought he acutally was a counter terrorist - see I told you it was bad for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
