Drink Problem?

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I am not an alcoholic, not even close. However, I have been known to drink socailly a few times every week, usually at the weekend. I usually go out and have a few pints of larger and move on to trendy alco-pops like Smirnoff, sometimes I even indulge in a few shots of vodka too. I realise that drinking can be bad for your liver, etc. Am I drinking too excess? I always get drunk to lighten up, before can dancing. I am rarly ill from beer and don't suffer too badly from hangovers if I sleep in. I could do to lose some weight too. How badly am I harming my body?

What's worse is that I don't know my limits, I have been a regular drinker for years and liked to think that it took a lot of alcohol to get me drunk. My tolerance can vary massively every night. Recently I have started to really annoy my mates when drunk, I argue with them for no reason. I know I am being an ass-hole but I can't seem to stop it and I think they have had enough of it.

Another worry could be medical, somebody told me that memory loss is a serious sign of a drink problem. You can't remember the night before because you were so drunk no memory traces were laid down. I believe it is a true medical syndrome and I wanted to know how bad it was. Does it mean I should drink less or just stick to my beer. I often suffer from this memory loss, usually on a heavy night but even after just a few pints. I am not worried but this can be annoying and has landed me in trouble (once woke up with a mysterious black eye, I went missing and have no recolection of a four hour period leaving a vodka bar). I have done all kinds of stupid stuff, I am a light-weight! I often can not remember the end of a night or even whole evenings, that can't be good.

Drinking enhances my social skills, but moderation goes out of the window. If I finish a beer I must get another one, but it's not like I drink a bottle of whisky every night.

I don't mean to ramble on, I just wanted to know what I can do about he memory loss, it's a bit of a concern. I just don't seem to be able to calm it down, I can't give up beer altogether either (the only drug I take and the only high-light to my week).

Normally about 20 units a week is safe (about 20 points of lager I think) for a man, but it does vary according to size. If when you finish a beer you MUST buy another then that perhaps is a slight problem- not knowing when to stop can be harmful. But unless you drink a bottle of whiskey a night, then its not a problem. The main warning signs of alcoholism is prolonged heavy drinking, and antisocial drinking, ie, alone, or to blot out problems.

If its worrying you lay off the pop for a week or two, and/or see your doc.

It matters not who won or lost, but how you place the blame.

    Hi

We've got some information about alcohol and problem drinking here: http://www.thesite.org/drugs/the_drugs/alcohol.html http://www.thesite.org/drugs/safety/do_i_have_a_drink_problem.html http://www.thesite.org/drugs/safety/dealing_with_a_drink_problem.html

    Karla

PS 20 pints of lager is 40 units of alcohol, on average.

my friend drinks a bottle of wine before he gones out and then has around 6pints in the pub/club.

he doesn't remember anything that ever happens and gets into fights..

you say the ammount you can drink varys greatly, well that can all depend on how much water you're drank before and how much you've eaten and a few other things too.

if you're dehydrated and drink alco you get drunk very easily. i remember one of the drivers from f1 saying he got very tipsy when he had a sip of chanpaing(check spelling) while up on the podium, dehydrated during the race...see?

if you can't remember anything and get into trouble then you have a problem.

I can drink a couple of cans then goto the club and drink about 4 pints and a few shots. and i never get hangovers (touch wood) and i can remember clearly everything that happened.

i have enough sense left to aviod fights.
remember if you're very drunk its very likely you won't be able to defend yourself in a bad situation.

    what advice can i offer?

drink water and eat before going out. drink only when you're out. when you finish a pint, talk to your mates and stuff then 10/30minutes later get another. just take it easy. i know it's hard.

but you are less likely to get into trouble, you'll be more friendly , make more friends, drink less so have more money and you won't feel like shit in the morning and your general health will be good too.

theres also a rule , i think you your body can only handle 1 pint of beer an hour so if you're drinking three an hour then you're going to be in a bad state. and how many hours do you spend in the club? i normanly spend 5hours..if you're drinking more than two pints an hour you'll be in trouble by the end of the night.

I don't learn, last night I ended up 'shot-gunning' some alco-pops (down a bottle in less than a second by putting a straw in the bottle to let air in as you open your throat and tip the bottle down your neck) and drinking whisky... before I went out and drank all kinds of beer. I can't remember the club but I remember the kebab and taxi home. Today I am in a mess, I woke up and had four pints of water then had to be sick, now I'm at work sweating and shaking. FFS, I'm shaking! Two bottles of Lucozade and I still feel ill.

Cheers for the advice, especially wOOt. I appreciate it. I know what I need to do, if I go out tonight I ain't drinking, maybe just a couple of beers and plenty of coke (as in the drink, I don't need another vice). I am also out next Wednesday and I will try to drink less or nothing at all, lets see how long I can last... 5 minutes will be an achivement.

Maybe it's worse than I realized, I will definately try to cut back. Nothing is worth this head-ache and I can't remember if it was even a good night. I am making myself unhealthy and I look like a right tit pissed-up on the dance floor. I will have to cut down, and no more dirty stinking kebab's! I really didn't need to see that again this morning with my head down the toilet.

    Thanks again everyone. <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/biggrin.gif"&gt;

Why am I am shaking and sweating? Is that normal hang-over symptoms? It's all Jameson's whisky's fault!

Stop being such a woss- a real man can take anything. (only joking). I don't know how old you are, but you describe drinking is not alarming at all. I myself and many other people I know have consumed vast quantities of everything and more, and we've found that the only limiting factor is cash- so take fifty quid or so, tell everyone ur broke, and dont take any cards- this way ull get nicely drunk, but no one will lend you money and you cant draw more. perfect!
However, a few general points. Beer makes you fat. no way around it. It also gives you hypoglycemia if consumed after alcohol. It also makes you burp and fart and other disgusting things- so basically on a night I avoid it like the plague- as for whiskey i'll hardly even start on it- its rank. Vodka is best (except for champagne, but most bars generally serve crap brands), mixed with anything, especially red bull (stroy to come) and also cocktails. Cocktails are the way to happy drunk followed by kinky drunk- what more can you ask for?
Vodka red bull- on a night when didnt really want to go out, ended up going to a club anyway, and felt like i could drink anyting, so ended up downing twenty three vodka red bulls in an hour, and then i blacked out, but by virtue of the red bull i was stillable to react socially to people (ok so the bouncer didnt appreciate me trying to square withhim, but what are girls for except to smooth such unpleasent social uncounters with a smile and soft word. The seconf plus was that when i was woken up at nine am, i was still completely trashed literally to the point where i was going through the corridors laughing and showing the famous "style of the mashed tiger" (my mate thought a 20cm smoke would sober me up). Anyway, as you may have gathered i am quite drunk, though am close to approaching a calmer state. So dont worry about your internal structures, as long as you enjoy yourself- keep going out.

Overdose- drop the bass- forget your name - just close your eyes - go insane...

What the fuck is a "woss"? Hmm?

I am a man, and I'm 19 (regular drinker since 13). I can handle a good few pints, what I am saying is it always escalates into an alcoholic orgy. I do stupid stuff, eg: I once drunk a bottle of tequila in twenty minutes and woke up in hospital, drinking has also made me go missing and 'come around' hours later, alone and confused in a different town. I also talk complete shit and become Mr Arguementitive. I am also known as 'Johnny Two-Pints' because I often buy and down two while everyone else sups one and I don't want to go to the bar again so soon. It was getting worse so don't trivialize it. Anyway, I realize that when I go out I try to prove that I am a 'big man' by out-drinking everyone else... I need to grow up and just take it easy. I am determined to be Mr Casual.

Leaving my credit/bank cards is a good idea, (until I wake up in Southport/Lancaster again and need a taxi).

    ... and I am not fat! -just festivly plump. <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/biggrin.gif"&gt;

    i know its very hard....

but to me it seems you lack confidence, you obviously need to be pissed off your head to get up and jump around on the dance floor.

you do need to grow up. a big man is someone who behaves sensibly. you've been drinking since you're 13, you haven't got bored with being pissed ? i tell you i sure have. doesnt't stop me drinking, just stops me from trying to 'show off' . of corase i could drink lots and show up my mates, what would that prove? that i'm an idiot and i can take more posion and i'll probably die younger too??

I am cutting back, still got in a mess on Wednesday drinking vodka shots and bottles of stella/source, but no hangover or being a tw@t. I decided if I go out with a good frame of mind I will get reasonably drunk and have a good time. I had a good attitude and can remember it.
When I go out and try to get smashed, or have to hang around with people that annoy me (one mates girlfriend springs to mind) I always drink stupid dangerous amounts which is a problem.
I am dealing with it myself, I am not going to the same boring clubs every night or with people that piss me off. I don't get bored or worked up over stuff that much, I can relax and chill. I just needed to realise what made me get so drunk.
I origionally posted this thread because after a heated arguement with some guy who pushed me at a friends house a few months ago, I went home to get a baseball-bat (how stupid!) because I was going to kill this dick-head that had pushed me. I turned up with a bat and the guy had gone home, I now realise that I looked like a c*nt infront of all my mates and if he had still been there I would probably be in prison right now. I couldn't really remember but I was embarrased, I had also punched another friend for asking me if I was ok after the arguement. The other stuff was pretty funny but it was getting serious, so now you know that its not just the stupid pranks, like coming sober in lancaster (got the last train from Preston, tring to go south to Leyland, thought I was in Chorley but actually in Lancaster! Taxi driver charged me £40 and I was in a mess).
I am sorting it out. Thank-you for the advice.
Woot- lack of confidence? Maybe, I am always confident, but only with people I know. I am not bored with drinking either. I realise I need a more mature attitude towards the pop. Cheers everyone <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/biggrin.gif">.

i have lived with an alchoholic for two years and believe me you have not got a drink problem.i suppose you have to ask your-self some questions like;do you wake up with a hang over and reach for the whisky bottle? do you wet the bed? does your girlfriend/wife get pissed off with your drinking? i donnt want to sound hard but i think you like having a few too many and are worring about nothing

  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Yeah, your probably right. Never wet the bed, I have been sick in my sleep though, thats pretty dangerous 'cos I didn't even wake up! (I know a lad that does wet the bed after a few shandy's). Cheers Alanna, at the moment I can still resist the white-spirit!

"Beer makes you fat. no way around it."fallen

1 pint of beer has approx the same ampount of calories as a bag of walkers crisps, so think that if you have 15 pints!?! (i don't know how many people usually have) then thats like eating 15 bags of crisps one after the other

My best advice to you is to drink as much as you can every night. Then when you are at work get full as well. This should be no bother as there should be alcohol still in your system from the night before. If this is not enough for you get a new job in a bar that allows you to drink while you work and drink flat out. You won't have any worries, I do this and it is great. There is no health effects and I always feel fine.
