The Solution

Drugs are a major cause behind unemployment, poverty, homelessness and crime so how do we stop them?

Step 1: Sack all the wasteful committees, consultants and advisers who run local government.

Step 2: Use the money to hire some large excisemen with big sticks to beat all the drug barons around the more sensitive body parts.

The drug problem won't be solved by social workers and therapists. We need to stop the supply of drugs at the source, so they don't reach the streets. If people can't get drugs, they won't be tempted into using them.

I like the irony, Liverpool's one of the major drug smuggling ports for the North of England. <IMG alt="image" SRC="smile.gif" border="0">

You've got a point; no one can be tempted if there's no source of temptation, but missed reality; wherever there's a profit to be made, someone's gonna risk it.

Look at America's war on drugs, it still hasn't eradicated drug problems within the US. Besides, I don't think all illegal drugs should remain illegal, which would solve two problems at the same time.

Even more Ironic is that Liverpool is home to the National Customs & Excise museum. The city used to have a magnificent customs house, but it was destroyed during the second world war.

Realistically, I do think we need to beef up the C&E. Give them more patrol boats and have a more visible presence in the major ports.

If drugs like cannabis and ecstasy were decriminalised than much of the organised crime element that comes with illegal drugs would dissappear.

Most crimes that are comminted by drugs users are addicts attempting to raise enough cash to continue using the drug. Coke and Heroin habits can be very expensive.

Slog the idea of stopping the source of drugs is good in theory but will never work. There's a market for these drugs and money to be made and you have to realise that theres a fair number of people who would hate to see the drugs run out.

Think about it, many employers (particularly the armed forces) won't take anyone who uses drugs (being stoned doesn't help productivity) thus many drug users are unemployable.

Drugs can also cause homelessness because people can be chucked out of their home if their relatives find out they are using drugs. (It happens more than you might think)

So wouldn't the solution be to start educating parents and employers ? If a parent chucked thier own sibling out for smoking the odd joint then quite clearly they have no idea of drugs. I agree that certain jobs can affect the performance of those at work especially if you are under the influence. But does it matter if somebody does the odd pill off duty ? Its no different to going out for a few beers out of hours. The only solution is for a complete review of the laws concerning drugs, both state and company and to educate the public on the facts not fiction. It is quite clear current laws don't work and they are now having negative effects on society, the sooner blunkett see's sense the better for everybody
