If you're counting builders and plumbers of right-wing tendencies who earn 40k a year as 'working class', I'd suggest you try to revaluate what the term actually means.
A -Aristocracy, Doctors, Dentists, Judges, senior civil servants, politicians and senior officers in the armed forces (Upper class/upper middle class)
B - Middle management, executive grade civil service, army officers (middle middle class)
C1 - Junior management, police, senior NCOs, teachers (lower middle class)
C2 Skilled manual workers brickies, plumbers etc (upper working class)
D - Semi skilled manual workers, shop staff (middle working class)
E- Casual labourers and the long-term unemployed, (lower working class)
Money has little to do with class (in more ways than one)
Actually that is how I view working class. Manual labour. No "bookly" education.
Yeah and nurses are in C1 - lower middle class........RUBBISH!!! Class systems are oudated.
A McJob is not sustainable employment, and to try and claim so is hopelessly naive or hopelessly stupid, and probably both.
If they are that important they should be paid accordingly.
ETA: I qualify as one of the lowest classes according to market researchers, because I do not own a television.
Jobs should be paid according to importance? Then we'd end up with the vast majority of jobs with equal pay, and the ones that aren't important disapeering altogether. A nice idea... but so many big businesses would suffer and/or fail, it'll never happen anytime soon.
What do you term a "McJob?" The likes of a few hours a week at McDonalds cleaning litter? Working the evening shift stacking shelves in a supermarket? Please elaborate, if the definition is a job that is unstatianable, or a student type job, they are practically the same thing as a student in education can't put in the hours to get the required pay. I have a mate who works minimum wage and could afford to move out on his own right now. Lucky cunt!. He's 17, went into full time after school, 9-5 in a Stainless Steel Factory.
They aren't sustainable. People should not be forced to go and work for McDonald's or for the bog-cleaning company just because those "jobs" exist.
And people should get paid a fair wage for their contribution to the business. Without bank staff, for instance, HSBC would not make £9billion profit. So they cut the bonuses of the staff, and "outsource" 2,000 of them to fucking India.
This job outsourcing you just pointed out has to stop now. Those call centres can't even help, and they ALL READ OFF THE SAME FUCKING SCRIPT CARD!
Me: Hello there. I am having trouble connecting to the internet.
Bloke: Have you tried the online help centre?
Me: I cant connect to the net. So no.
Bloke: Is it plugged in?
Me: Right. Its plugged in, it dials up ok to other lines, modem is fine, wire is fine, its a problem on your end. Is my account active?
Bloke: I'll put you on to someone who can help.
*wait on hold*
Blokess: Hello. What is your problem?
Me: I can't conn...
*repeats above converstaion*
Thats AOL call centre. Account Canceled after that phone call. Bloody hell. Not only did they take it from people who knew what you said and helped, they gave it to people who it would seem don't even know what a computer is.
This list needs modernizing. What about call centre workers, complementary therapists, footballers and professional 'celebs' like Jeff Brazier and Nasty Nick? where do they fit in? :sour:
call centre workers - semi-skileld
complemetary therapists - are they the equivalent of Doctors
Prof cebs - we might need to introduce an 'f' social class...
complementary therapists - a very broad church, anything from massage, aromatherapy and much more.
funny thing is the c2s probably earn more than the c1s these days.
Exactly nowadays these set boundaries are farcical....
Indeed I know many call centre workers and other sales people earning more than teachers.
40k a year (which is what many builders earn- plumbers can actually pocket 60k+) is certainly well above what most lower or working class people usually earn. But to me a fundamental part of being working class is holding certain fundamental values and beliefs regarding working and social welfare. I don't think free-market Thatcherite folk can be described as working class even if they sweep streets for a living.
It's complicated isn't it? Used to be you were just born into a class...
No, that's socialism.
People who believe in free-trade economics and Thatcherism are working class.
- money, how much you earn, and how much in the way of financial assets you own both here & abroad
- having the right connections in order to exercise power & influence
- education, are you educated to at least degree standard (good uni, good degree)
- where you live, ie a place that has a high social standing and attracts successful entrepreneurs
- the car you drive, or the cars you own
The rest is as they say "a load of bollox"
There are those who have all the above, and there are those who aspire to have all the above - end of story.
 oh so can you explain to me why there are missionaries working in africa now, volunteer workers, people who devote their whole lives to helping people, you think everyone loves and wants money, fame, reputation, might be true for the masses but there are people who want more than that, love maybe, to be able to enjoy and respect life for what it is and not for what people want you to respect it for, money etc. seriously i pity your narrow minded head...complete freak...you might learn some day but you could be another luke...
i understand worlds you know little of.
you seem to understand very little about humanity ...and how it enables sucsess.
in fact ...it could be frrethepeeps getting us all in a tizz!
In my view "class" within our society is defined by:
- money, how much you earn, and how much in the way of financial assets you own both here & abroad
- - where you live, ie a place that has a high social standing and attracts successful entrepreneurs
- the car you drive, or the cars you own
The rest is as they say "a load of bollox"
There are those who have all the above, and there are those who aspire to have all the above - end of story. "
How come every seriously wealthy person I have ever met dresses like a tramp and bombs around in a beaten up, shitbox car then?
Ever seen Richard Branson? He looks like he's presenting Newsround for god's sake. His main interests include dropping into the ocean and grinning like a cunt for no reason. What does the worlds richest woman get around in? A frigging train and a tiara ripped from the dead hands of some local chieftain in Africa.
The only people who really go for that "proving how rich I am" stuff are those who haven't realised yet what it can't do. Money only tends to be a problem for those with too much and those with none. Everyone else just muddles on by.
