Wars prior to the 1600's were in the main dynastic, usually one king having a quarrel with another. From the 1600's to the 1900's, wars were mainly for increasing territorial holdings and economic power. Namely, securing markets and trade lanes. The wars of last century were mainly ideological based, Capitalism vs Communism, Democracy vs Fascism, Nationalism vs Colonialism.

But that was the past. Today's and the wars of the near future will be based on securing access to and controlling increasingly scarce resources, namely oil and water. In many ways, the war in Iraq is but just the first shot in the wars for resources.

Canada is both blessed and cursed in having rather abundent reserves of both oil and water. Indeed, Canada holds between 25 to 30% of the worlds entire supply of fresh potable water. Bad news is, the US is our next door neighbour and she is running dry.

In the US midwest, its grain belt, the aqua fillers (subterranean water wells) are being depleted faster then they can be replenished. The Californain agriculturial industry with its vast factory farm is located in the desert and they are dependant on water pipe in from Canada. The demand for fresh water in the US grows by leaps and bounds every year and is now to the point where the US is demanding that Canada allow export of fresh water into the US under NAFTA, something Canada is resisting.

We know from bitter experience that you can never slate the US thrist, no matter how much you give her, she always wants more. In BC, we are subject to the Columbian River Treaty, part of which states that the US can without notice open up the flood gates and drain Canadian lakes that are part of the upper Columbia River system. A decade ago they did just that, and as a result, lowered the level of Lake Okanagon by ten feet. Given that the lake is almost 100 miles long and 10 miles wide at points and is only one in a series of lakes, that was a vast amount of water to lose. The Kokonee Salmon stocks of the lakes were almost wiped out and are now just beginning to recover.

And given the recent droughts and historically low snow pack in the mountains these past few years, the situation is getting even more unstable. We are nolonger replenshing our lakes and reservours as we once did. And yet, the US is demanding more and more fresh Canadian water.

Many Canadians believe that if Canada is to be invaded by the US, it will not be for ideological reasons, or some obscure terrorist threat, but for our water and oil reserves. And you can bet that the excuse used to justify said invasion will be identical to those given to invade Iraq.
