Cannabis decriminalisation

As you may have heard, many of our European neighbours have begun to decriminalise cannabis for personal use. We've got two new articles here:
http://www.thesite.org//drugs/safety/cannabis__the_laws_they_are_achanging.html
http://www.thesite.org//drugs/safety/cannabis_in_europe_tougher_laws.html

Is the UK out of step with the rest of Europe?
Beep boop. I'm a bot.

    Karla,
I think you have right. I have lived in three different countries and the laws seem to differ quite a bit as I have traveled. Even the US is starting to be a bit more open minded, at least allowing some medical use. Hemp products are sold everywhere in america-clothing, hats, oils and homeopathic remedies. Amsterdam practices a policy of tolerance and you have to love that. After all alcohol is legal most anywhere and it is far worse on the body. when will evryone get open minded about this? I magine the revenues that the governments could make? it would blow tobacco away...

Does seem strange to me that alcohol, which is in my opinion a far greater danger to public health and safety,eg. getting into fights, cars, or other trouble cos it seems funny at the time, is legal wheras pot, which i think is quite boring and makes people be boring, eg.sitting and talking in a corner and laughing at nothing, is quite harmless ( in comparison)

Possibly, but the most important point is that the majoprity of people in this country support legalisation. A great deal of the people in the UK that don't smoke it still support legalisation. It's time the government listened to people and let us be responsible for ourselves.

Unfortuantly the current govenment and most of the parties still view all substances with the 'drugs are bad.. mmmkay' attitude, they seem to add all drugs (even the softer ones) into one catagory and are far more interested with spending their illicit substances budget on punishing rather than education, saftey and rehabilitation.

I think cannabis should be downgraded further and perhaps issued on a licence basis or age limit for example where small amounts for personal use would be accepted, If cannabis was decriminalised then it should follow suit with similar laws are alcohol with regards to work (ie. companies would have to issue regulation stating no cannabis use while at work for safety reasons) and perhaps special cafes like in holland to prevent smoke coming into contact with children in public areas.

I agree that cannabis users are less troublesome than alcohol ones but one thing I've always noticed with regards to classification on drugs is that in contrast to ecstasy, cannabis is a powerful mind drug.

Hopefully the govenment will soon realise that people are going to carry on using substances for recreation regardless of what rules or punishments they dish out, the battle is waged one way at the moment towards criminalisation if they wish to win the war they need to decriminalise and regulate safely.

The Government approaches this subject as it does all other thorny issues, by taking a stance designed to leave them open to as little criticism as possible, in this case grouping all drugs together under the label "BAD - not to be messed with in election years". However they pander their stance to the reactionary conservatives among us, and perhaps are now starting to realise that there is a large and popular feeling that not all drugs are the same.

This is demonstrated in Brixton, where police no longer arrest those caught in possesion of "small" amounts of cannabis on the basis that it is a waste of police time. I like this attitude. It is still a pilot scheme but may be extended further across the country if successful. Following on from this the way could be opened for a referendum, and I think more people would turn out to vote for that than the last general election.

All in all I do see signs that the Government may start to reconsider their policy on this issue.

    Only users lose drugs

because (at least the strong stuff) makes you stupid. You might not think so but, several of my friends are growing weaker and weaker minded by the day. One friend in the spotlight, 'Jason' we will call him, went from a honor student taking advanced algebra his 9th year, to studdering and to slow to do more than basic math only 4 1/2 years later. But then again he uses about a 1/8 or more of T135 or purple hair every day. But it does have medicinal purposes, take glaucoma or severe pain (for old age) if they are old who should care if they are getting high.

Yea, cannibis really can affect your head with heavy, regular use. My brother smokes it like u would ciggarettes and he suffers from paranoia and major mood swings, not to mention forgetfullness...he is totally unable to survive the day without it which shows that it can seriously affect u.
However Im totally up for it being legalised because I personally think people will use it regardless of wether or not its legal. Also it does have a lot of benefits and unfortunatly the government r yet to allow it to be used legally for medical perposes which is a shame really.
