getting a Work placement

i have just left my apprenticeship or handed in my notice, i thinking about
working for free for a couple of month i don't want to work for a charity shop or anything i just want to GAIN SOME EXPERIENCE IN A DIFFERENT FIELD most probaly the retail sector supermarkets hige street shops.
I just don't how do you go about offering your services for free
i mean do you send them a letter or phone saying i'll work for you for free?
any help, advise plz

What was your apprenticeship in?
thing everyday i am glad i stuck it out for a few month they said
they will give me a reference which i wouldnt have got if i had left in the first
week.
as for supermarket jobs i just ment general retail work although i haven't worked
in one yet so i don't mind
