contraceptive injection

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Right, I've done a search but all of the posts I found were old and therefore possibly out of date. Does anyone have any experiences, good or bad, of the contraceptive jab they would share with me? I am thinking of changing onto that, basically because I'm sick of having to remember my pill every day, but one of my friends started on it a few months ago and it's given her really bad mood swings and some other side effects. Obviously, with an injection you can't just stop taking it if it gives you dodgy side effects unlike the pill, so I'd like to hear some other opinions if they're out there.

ive not had many problems on it. whilst settling into it, i'd experience long periods when my body was under physical stress, but now i dont have any at all. I have put on weight tho, which is hard to shift :(

there are quite a few posts on it from not too long ago about depo provera jab. Some people get on with it ok, but I personally found it to be a complete nightmare for three months, automatically triggering pretty bad depression. I then had to live with that for 12 whole weeks till it wore off.

i had the same problem with the pill - just couldn't remember it every day. but i got on well with the combined hormones in the pills, so i swapped on to the patch a few months ago, and it's perfect.

i haven't had any side effects at all (although i had very, very few with the pill, so my body might just be tolerant of such things). i stick a patch on my arse cheek once a week and forget about it for the next 7 days. it's not affected by sickness and diarrhea either.

I have the injection and have had no problems that i'm aware of.
It does seem to have adverse effects on quite a large number of people but it only lasts 3 months, just try it and see. If it's bad, don't get it again.

I'm on it and its such a god send. I did for the first few months have some problems with it like irregular perids and mild mood swings. but they sorted that out by putting me on the pill for a month as well as the jab and I've been fine ever since. I love not having periods! Tampons are far to expensive!!

Exercise and i are not in agreement if i'm having a bad sinus day. which is quite often. However the ENT specialist is hopefully sorting that, and I'm doing TKD and goin to the gym where i can exercise but regulate it so i can breathe too :D

I loved it for the first few months... then I started putting on alot of weight within a short period of time, causing me to break out in stretch marks in the most unusual places, like the back of legs, sides of me breasts... me upper arms and round me hips. Mood swings kicked in as well.

Worse thing was, it took me nearly 2 years to get me period back after I came off it as when I told the doctor what happened, she took me of it straight away. Told me to let it run out of me system before I try another contraceptive.

At one point, the doctor was concerned about me fertility, as it took sooo long before I got me period back. I'm fine now, but it did give me a scare.

So ya could say, it didn't work quite well for me.
But everyone is different. Some people do get great results from it.

    Thanks girls.

I'm going to stick with the pill for the time being, I'm a bit scared of getting side effects and not being able to make them go away.

I didnt like it at all. I went on this years ago when it first was available and it made me irritable, violent and generally not a nice person. I am normally friendly helpful and very placid. Back on the pill now and much happier.

    patch patch patch!

    *does a dance*

it's the same hormones as the pill, so if you get on well with the pill, you'll probably get on well with the patch. and if you don't, you can just take it off, and it's out of your system at least as quickly as the pill. joyous.

This might sound silly, but the idea brings back memories of getting injections there as a small child and having to wear a plaster on it. Doesn't it look a bit obvious? I think I'd feel silly :chin: And worry about it falling off!

it does look kinda obvious, but since only me and mr. kaff ever see my naked arse, i'm not too bothered. if i have even a pair of pants or bikini bottoms on, you can't see it. and it's much less obvious than a small child on my arm (what would have happened otherwise - my pill taking was shocking) or a face full of acne (what happens if i have contraception without oestrogen like the injection).

they've never fallen off me. in fact, you have to forcibly rip them off after the week is up. that's through a weeks worth of showers, baths, etc. once you stick them on, the bastard ain't going anywere.

i know other people who've tried them, and like any method, it doesn't suit everyone, but i'd never go back now.

Thanks Kaff :thumb: I will have a think about that one. I'd never really thought about the patch before... mainly because I assumed it went on the arm like a nicotine one.

there are certain places you can put it: upper arm, upper back, lower belly and arse. i tried it on my upper arm once, but it got itchy and sore. so now i just wear it on my arse, on alternating sides :)

like i said, it might not suit, but it's free, so i figured it was worth a try.

A question about the patch kaff-do you still have a seven day break with a bleed when on it or not?

yup, you have a patch free week :)

although after consulation with my doctor, it seems you can run them together just like the pill if you need. fun, fun.

Ooh, thanks for that. My pill taking can be a bit shocking, I would miss it half the time if it wasn't for my Daniel waving the packet at me saying "Don't forget it!"

I've looked at a couple of websites, and read one thing saying that you have to have it on a different place each week, and another saying you shouldn't wear tight clothes over it or the area will get irritated. It was an old article though, from 2001; are those facts still relevant?

My BFs sister has it and she says that its great for her. She proper raves on about it but her friend had it and shes put on LOADS of weight since then so it varies person to person.

you shouldn't put it on the same place every week, but i've been alternating sides. apparently this is fine. it's just to stop your skin getting sore.

how tight are we talking? my underwear causes no irritation.

sounds like a good plan for those who are crap at remembering to take their pills.

have they started doing multi vitamin patches yet? i never remember to take them!

Well, the kind of thing I was worried about was tight jeans (if on the butt) or tight tops (if on the back or arm).

i don't own anything skintight, but considering i work at a desk and sit on my arse all day and it's fine, i wouldn't have thought pressure from tight clothes would affect it.

but i guess it depends how sensitive your skin is.

Cheers. I've got an appointment for a repeat precription of the pill tomorrow in any case, so I'll have a chat to the nurse then :)
