Where did this some from? Like is it actaully an Aussie thing or is it from calling someone mate on a ship?

    yeah similar here. i call one friend Schweinhund which is pig dog in german, and a load of people call each other gilipollas (dickheads). but then again i have one friend i call lesbian love goddess, and another called hunnymoomin creature. :D

    i use the word.
    i believe it does go back to the seamen of all the great ports this country has had over the centuries.
    on a dangerous sea you realy do have mates.
    yes mate ...its an endearment ... a friendly non agressive greeting or result.

    It always fun using terms such as 'mate' and 'cheers' in the US, the Americans dont really know how to take it and get confused.

    i use it to male friends, but for some reason it really winds me up when i hear a female voice say it. tis quite strange.

    Everyone says "la" and "innit" round here. The more rockerish people say "guvna" "mate" and "man".

    I do that all the time, as do many of my friends. "All right, dickhead?" seems to just roll off the tongue, these days.
