vitamin C causes cancer?

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Been all over the news that too much vitamin C from supplements has been proven to cause defects in the DNA and can cause cancer.

This is quite worrying because i take a vitamin C supplement.

Interseting that theyre not saying HOW much is too much!

How much Vitamin C to you take every day? British recommended amount is 30mg/day, I think it goes up to 60mg orr so for smokers. The USA has a different RDA, higher amount. Lots of people take 1000mg/day, which is probably more than they really need - you just wee it out anyway.

Drifter, it's quite likely to be a scare story, so don't panic too much. It may simply be that someone who doesn't know much about scientific research has misinterpreted the results. Where did you find the story?

If you're really worried, switch to a supplement with a lower daily dosage, or increase your intake of fruit and veg (the best way to get your vit C anyway).

i take 60 mg, which isn't a lot actually, i thought it was more than that. But i work in a health shop where we sell up to 1000mg like you said.

I heard it on the radio, it's the main story i think.

i cant imagine how vit c could cause all that damage, its water soluble, so it goes straight through if you take too much. its the fat soluble ones like vit A you gotta watch i think.

i take a vit B complex when i think of it! i had a deficiency of B12 or something when i was younger, this big whole anaemia thing i had. mums convinced i dont get enough B12 or folic acid so she lines up the pills hehe..

that's true... but i believe that long-term vitamin excess can also cause kidney failure

I used to take an all-round supplement but it gave me really bad spots (well, before I'd had virtually none ) and now I've stopped they've gone *touchwood* . dunno about cancer though - it's a pretty random disease in that there's a very low chance the carcinogens wil actually cause cell mutation.
