old wives tales?

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
ever since i overheard someone say "its bad luck to wash clothes on new years day" when i was young, ive never allowed the washing machine to be turned on in my house on new years day, also, i dont know why but at 11:55 new years eve i open the front and back doors to let the old year out and new year in, then shut them at about 12:15 after wishing neighbours new year.

i was wondering if anybody believed any wives tales? if so which ones do you follow?

maybe its just a stupid rittual i have.

 but at the same time, I like the concept of the door one - that's sorta spunky but to me, not gonna make a difference!

Sums it up really. But I think you mean supserstitions rather than old wives tales.

i paid off some money i owed at 10pm last night cause my mum said if i was in debt on new year's eve, i'd be in debt all year.

i think it's bullshit, but didn't want to take any chances, as this next year will probably be really important financially.

    Nah not all are.

Have you heard the one about where if a bird flies in your house it means a death ?
When we had a coal fire it all got clogged up and as my hubby tried to clear all the crap out of the chimney (as far as he could reach) a load of soot came down and then a wild bird followed. So he got the bird out of the house.....not long after we had a death in our family.
Call me supersticious, call me stupid but at the end of the day we had a wild bird which got into our house and soon after a death.........make what you will of it.

Its not everyday a wild bird flies into your house. On that occasion one did and we had a death fairly soon after, I dont think thats coincidence.
But thats just my view, everyone to their own I suppose.

taking it on face value they are a load of balls but very intriguing, there's something really truthful about them sometimes

I can't believe people who are educated and (mostly) logical actually believe in this o_O

I went to some tarts house last night and she made me hold a bit of coal and walk inside first. What was that about?

    Aye :/

It was only us two and she said I had to do it 'cause I had dark hair.

The scary thing is there was a bit of coal sitting outside ready for all this to happen when she got back o_O

BeckyBoo, it's been at least 3 times in the last 3 years that a pigeon entered the house, and no one died except my neighbor recently, which was much much after the last pigeon.

Personally I don't believe such things, but my mum apparently does. On new year's day she opens all doors and windows "for the new year to come in", turns on all faucets and says that everyone who enters the house today must set their right foot in before the left one.

No, not really. Old wives tales is things like carrots making you see in the dark, and eating your crusts making your hair curl. Superstitions is stuff about luck etc. Slight difference, but just ignore me I'm being pedantic.

no big difference, miffy's right. Old wive's tales are generaly more truthful or occuring than superstitions that could be explained as simple coincidences.

Oh well, never mind 01j01, I AM pedantic, I always have to have everything exact and precise, it drives Mr Miffy round the bend and he always says I must be half Vulcan. ;)

(The "half Klingon" bit that he says straight afterwards is less flattering.)

they have been started by old senile wives, hence no truth
