Film of the year

edited January 2023 in General Chat
(Shamelessly reposted from my livejournal)

I've seen a fair few films this year. So many, it was pretty hard to put together even a shorlist.

I've created the following list of films that make the top 10 -

Lost In Translation
The Station Agent
50 First Dates
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
Troy
The Day After Tomorrow
The Incredibles
I, Robot
The Terminal
Bride & Prejudice

And five more that get an "honourable mention"

Kill Bill Vol 2
Shark Tale
Big Fish
Harry Potter
Sky Captain and the world of tomorrow.

I find it very difficult to come up with a top five though, and especially a top one.

What films did you rate this year?

    Ahhh. Too many films!

My top 5 were (in no particular order):

    Lost in Translation
    The Station Agent
    Kill Bill Vol 2
    The Terminal
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

And a close 6th was The Incredibles.

Out of that lot I'd go for I, Robot.
I haven't seen a great film for a long time.

Try and see Grave of the Fireflies then, jap animated movie by Miyazki (Spirited Away guy), about the firebombing of Tokyo.

Years old so not up for consideration here but one of the greatest and saddest films I have ever seen.

Cheers, may put it on my Christmas list! I'm trying to broaden my film horizons - since watching Troy in the cinema I have become increasingly bored with standard Hollywood offerings.

Have seen loads of good films this year (loving my UGC card!!). My faves were:

    Big Fish
    Finding Neverland
    The Station Agent
    13 Going On 30
    50 First Dates
    Hero

Saw the Manchurian Candidate the other night and it was pretty good too.

Can't think of any others at the moment. Most dissappointing film for me was Lost In Translation. Thought it was pants and I can't stand Scarlett Johanson.

Quite a lot else to be honest, and yes, those are the best ones. Though it was quite hard to separate a few others.

The terminal I fell asleep in, its based on a true story but aspects of it are redicuously overfetcehd and it was so damn repetitive!

I think you watched a different version to me where the film was repetative. The one that I watched had no sense of repitition. But then if you're going to fall asleep during a film then you probably dreamt the rest of it. Ho-hum.

It was only very very loosely based on true events, clearly it was a film, not a true-to-life documentary.

The day after tomorrow was annioying unrealistic

yes, a hollywood blockbuster about the end of the world. Funny that that should be unrealistic.

Clearly it rates in the better films for other reasons than realism then, hmm?

I, Robot, well they treid to take an idea from a book but completely messed it up, if will smith hadn't been in it I bet it wouldnt have been half so popular.

Clearly that's why they chose Will then I guess :/

I'm judging the film as it stands alone, not as to how it compares to a book.

Bride and predudice, what the hell? Another film thats just insulting towards indians and takes the piss out of a very good novel. I haven't seen the rest... I hear the incredibles is very good though.

Errr, yes. How exactly is the film insulting towards indians?

Well, I think we can safely say that your opinion differs from mine. I did notice you didn't say what your best films of the year were, though.

it has everything! blood, guts, gore, sex, violence, comedy, jizz, chains, hooks, bodybuilders...

not to mention kakihara is easily one of the best film charaters ever envisioned.

but anyway, my vote goes to Spirited Away, i just got lost in that film and felt like i was a little kid again.

with the remake of 'the dawn of the dead' coming a close second, if only for just busting straight into the action... definately one of the best intros to a film, fuck setting the story, jump straight in.

it also had the fantastic version of disturbed's 'down with the sickness'.

This would have made my list of top ten easily, but I think it was 2003.

Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence was stunning, just wouldn't have it as a top film of the year

Shaun of the Dead or School of Rock.

Or was that last year? This year was an awful year for me as far as films go if they WERE last year.

    Eternal Sunshine
    Lost in Translation
    Motorcyle diaires
    21 grams
    The Dreamers
    Before Sunset

    Still waiting to see: coffee and cigarettes; The Station agent; Big Fish;

One of the worst films despite starring the lovely Mr Depp has to be Secret Window, so so so crap. The village was fairly lame too.

Although the best film is going to be the one I've worked on and feature in to be screened xmas week - No it's NOT porn :p
