    Have I missed something?

Are you suggesting that because the US has a public sector it is automatically socialist?

By that argument all Govts are socialist...

system in which the government controls production and distribution of goods and wealth in a country.

It doesn't own industry. It redistributes resources.
Whereas capitalists emphasize freedom for the individual to possess private property, socialists emphasize the well-being of the community. They strive to achieve this through many methods, including public ownership, regulation, and state-sponsored social programs. Socialism has taken on many different forms throughout the world, with varying degrees of success. Some socialists favour a gradual move away from unrestricted capitalism and the maintenance of a democratic society; others favour force to overthrow capitalism and distribute wealth.

The majority of eduation in the US is publicly owned on the premise society on the whole benefits from an educated population.

    The US is heavily regulated.

State sonsored social programs eat away more than a quarter of the country's money.

    Are these not socialist characteristics?

In a definition i read stated it was a medium between full blown capitalism and communism. Is the US communist? Certainly not. Is the US capitalist? Certainly not. It is in the middle and socialism is this middle.

Bollocks is "socialism in the middle"

You pretending the US is "socialist" :rolleyes" and Labrat pretending he's "against authority" just results in a complete waste of time and energy

    *sigh*

Exactly what I say. All govts are socialist. Things ( including money) can belong either to the state ( public property) or to people ( private property). Public property is the same that socialist ( socialised, owned by the state not by individuals) property so all states are socialist by definition.

You might say that but no else agrees with you, bar a few lunatic fringe capitalists.

So, as well as having redefinied anarchism so its no longer anything to do with authority, you've now redefined socialism so its no longer to do with ownership of the means of production.

I think I'll go and shine potatoes or do something else useful instead.
