Anyway to answer the question, the use of spam to describe mass emails seems to come from a Monty Python sketch in which they would sing the spam song over the conversation, drowning out the real talk. Since the crappy emails drown out the real emails then this term was taken by geeks to describe UCE.

Here's what the spam company say about it

You've probably seen, heard or even used the term "spamming" to refer to the act of sending unsolicited commercial email (UCE), or "spam" to refer to the UCE itself. Following is our position on the relationship between UCE and our trademark SPAM.

Use of the term "spam" was adopted as a result of the Monty Python skit in which our SPAM meat product was featured. In this skit, a group of Vikings sang a chorus of "spam, spam, spam . . . " in an increasing crescendo, drowning out other conversation. Hence, the analogy applied because UCE was drowning out normal discourse on the Internet.

We do not object to use of this slang term to describe UCE, although we do object to the use of the word "spam" as a trademark and to the use of our product image in association with that term. Also, if the term is to be used, it should be used in all lower-case letters to distinguish it from our trademark SPAM, which should be used with all uppercase letters.

Spam is revolting. My mum made spamburgers once (we were in a shop and the can and the name attracted me - which, incidenty, was why I have the spam avatar, but that isn't really interesting - and it wasn't actually made into a burger, it was just grilled for a bit) and one bite was enough to put me off for life.

If we have another war, and they re-introduce DORA and all that shit, they'd better find meat which is both tasty and economical. Like Aberdeen Angus burgers.

No, I was serious. I'd never heard of it before I went to Scotland last weekend. And I was thinking he was a multi millionaire farmer who controlled the beef production and sales in Scotland.

    It could happen, you know.

We should start calling our cows Galway Gerry and Wexford Wille. That would be funny.

Now, I must reply and say, fuck yes.

But I'm trying to not do an article about voter apathy, so cut me some slack. This doesn't happen often. :p

ok so by now its a little off topic, but the spam muesum is located 20 miles from where I used to live. Every day I'd see the billboard that said "are you curious yet?" and yes, I was, but not enough so.
