Totally wrong sleeping pattern

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
My sleeping pattern is like this @ the moment I go to sleep @ around 6am then wake @ 6pm.

So i'm awake from 6pm-6am.

Any tips on how to get out of this pattern as it's so not normal & is doing my head in being totally wide awake when it's night time outside.

.:Crispy:.

One day just don't go to bed at 6am. Just stay up. Perhaps even go out for the day. You will be absolutely shattered I'd imagine and hopefully come 6pm tired enough to go to bed in the evening rather than the morning.

Or you could do it more slowly, and perhaps start going to bed an hour earlier earlier every few days (eg. go at 5am instead, and get up an hour earlier).

Are you staying up all night in order to sit at your PC or is it something else?

Yep do that. Maybe even when you're wide awake try and do something active to burn up some of that excess energy. I know you can't exactly go out for a run in the middle of the night but if you're awake from 6pm then go for a jog in the evening then come home and stay up all night as usual. But do something productive like read a book or something, rather than spend all that time online. Then just try to stay awake all day too. I agree with Bumblebee, you should try and get out and do something during the day too, you'll just be restless at night when you go to bed otherwise.

And yep, you'll be shattered but that's what you're aiming for. Avoid caffeine and other stimulants too, otherwise you'll find it harder to get to sleep when you want to.

They are right. You need to stay up all night then force yourself to stay awake all day until a reasonable bed time. You'll need to go out in the day though - if you sit infront of the computer or telly then you'll go to sleep. Go out in the fresh air but ffs don't drive anywhere if you're really tired ;)

Personally for me the go to bed a bit earlier get up a bit earlier thing didn't work for me when I was in a bad sleeping pattern cos I'd just be lying awake for that hour feeling shit and still go to sleep at the same time. But that's just me.

Having said that though, what did work for me was staying awake after being up all night till say 3pm, then going to bed. Then I'd wake up at around 1am and the next day I'd try to go to bed at a similar time but only for a nap; I'd get someone to wake me up after a few hours and then I'd carry on the day as normal until late evening when I'd go to bed. The afternoon sleep was enough to keep me going for the rest of the day without being the full nights sleep and then when I went to bed at night I'd wake up quite early.

Oh yeah and as LSS said when you're up all night resist the temptation to sit online for hours on end. Do something productive that will use a bit of energy. And the following day when you're still awake make sure you eat well (by that I don't mean drink pints of coffee to keep you awake) cos when you are knackered and feeling lousy it's easy to go without any proper food.

When i'm awake @ night i'm not online all the time. I'll only be online because i'm bored shitless with what's on the tv but then i'm too wide awake to sleep so i'll find something to read online to lift my boredom a little.

I'll give the whole stay awake all night & day to make me shattered & want to sleep. This method has proved successful before but it's a case of maintaining it & not slipping back into my old crappy ways.

Is there really nothing else you can do in the night but watch tv & go online? Can't you do some kind of physical activity, even if it's only cleaning or tidying up? Could you prepare a meal for the next evening or something?

As for not slipping back, the easy way is to do something in the daytime to tire you out. get up early, we're taking around 7.30am and get dressed and go out! The world is your oyster, don't stay in your house all the time. Go to bed around 11pm, no later. Going to bed and waking up and the same time every day is really good for you. Do you have a job or go to college or anything?

I live @ home with my parents so I can't exactly go wandering round the house in the dead of night as they'll probably think i'm a burglar:D

Nope i've got no life i'm afraid. That's why it's so hard to maintain a normal sleeping pattern as I haven't got an everyday routine to do.

I was wondering the same thing. Is watch TV and go online and play Xbox really all you ever do? I'm not trying to be critical but if you don't have a job or go to college then could you not at least find something else to do with your time? Take up a hobby or something?

    Get a job.

I'd go with this option. The reason you're up at stupid hours is because you have no reason not to be.

Even if you can't face changing your patterns, you could work a night shift.

    I'm trying

It really gets to me after a while when everything you've tried has always been rejected. The only thing i've achieved in the last 19 odd months is get a full drivers license & that was solely driven by my mum's money paying for it.

Nope that reason doesn't hold any truth due to me wanting to go to sleep but then i'm totally wide awake & not tired then sleep just ain't going to happen. Say if I was going to visit someone tomorrow then i'd still be awake @ 6am & probably have a couple hours sleep before i'd be forced to get up.

I can face changing my patterns hence this thread. I've thought about a night shift but then that is just fuelling my odd sleeping pattern. I want normality & a daily routine.

Why can't you get a job? If it's cos you are under qualified then get your bum into a college and enroll on some courses, even if you only go to nightschool for an hour a week it makes all the difference. just a basic hygiene certificate can get you a job in a kitchen (even if it's only washing up =P) If it's because you're not confident enough in social situations or whatever then start going out and socialising until you feel differently. If it's because you're applying for jobs that are far too above you cos you don't have the experience then get a different job doing something that you don 't need experience for. Just shop work would be a start, and then, yes, you do actually have experience in retail, even if it's only on the checkout in asda. If you're failing to get a job cos you don't have much to say for yourself, ie. "what are your hobbies and interests?" you: "xbox, internet, television" then go and get interested in other things. There's loads of other things you can spend your time doing besides staring at a screen. Everyone has to have a job, it's a fact of life. I don't know how old you are but you can't bum off your parents all your life.

Duran - I can't help but be professional about mad sleeping patterns ;)
