SELF ESTEEM

Not sure whether this should be here or anything goes, but I just found a poem I'd like to share about self esteem, that I was given in a group therapy session in hospital.
SELF ESTEEM by Viginia Satir

I am me
In all the world, there is no one else like me,
there are persons who have some parts like me,
Therefore everything that comes out of me
is authentically mine because I alone chose it
I own everything about me
My body, including everything it does;
My mind, including all its thoughts and ideas;
My eyes, including the images of all they behold;
My feelings, whatever they may be
anger, joy, frustration, love disapointment, exitement;
My mouth, and all the words that come out of it,
polite, sweet, rough, correct or incorrect;
My voice, loud or soft; and all my actions,
whether they be to others or myself.
I own my fantasies, my dreams, my hopes, my fears.
I own all my triumphs and sucesses,
all my failures and mistakes.
Because I own all of me,
I can become imediately aquainted with me.
By so doing I can love me and be friendly with me in all my parts.
I can then make it possible for all of me to work in my best interests.
I know there are aspects about myself that puzzle me, and other aspects I do not know.
But as long as I am friendly and loving to myself,
I can courageously and hopefully look for the solutions to the puzzelsand for the ways to find out more about me.
However I look and sound,
Whatever I say and do,
and whateverI think and feel at a given moment in time is me.
This is authentic andrepresents where I am at that moment in time.
When I review later how I looked and sounded,
What I said and did,
and how I thought and felt,
Some parts may turn out to be unfitting,
I can discard that which is unfitting,
And keep that which proved fitting,
and invent something new for that which I discarded.
I can see, hear feel,think,say and do.
I have the tools to survive,
To be close to others,
To be productive,
And to make sense and order out of the world of people and things outside of me.
I own me,
and therefore I can engineer me,
I AM ME
AND I AM OKAY

sorry for such a long one, just wanted to share that with you all.
Take care one and all.
Love and Peace
LUKA

    This is so strange!

    I finished my drug rehab program today (went great, BTW), and the poem our group read at the graduation ceremony is the one you just posted!

    Here I am, on the other side of the world, reading the same poem and thinking the same thoughts without realizing it. Makes you think...

    Great poem LUKA <IMG alt="image" alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif">.

    Nice to see you back Burnout_Girl (maybe now you should be Phoenix_Girl <IMG alt="image" alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif"&gt; ), I'm glad it went well.

    Welcome Back Burnout, great to see you are back. Hope things went well for you, you have been missed and our thoughts have been with you.

    I guess that poem is bulk standard for hospitals, clinics, therapy centres to help us pick ourselves up off the ground, but it's got such a nice sentiment to it. <IMG alt="image" alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif"&gt;

    Once again great to see you back

    Luka,
    That poem really inspired me, i suffer from depression and quite severe self esteem problems and i found that just reading it helped. Are you named Luka after the song?

    I didn't lose my mind, it was mine to give away.

    I am so glad that you all enjoyed the poem, the sentiment is nice, I hope it has helped bring a little light into your lives <IMG alt="image" alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif">.

    I guess the same old shit never changes I had my first session with my CPN today what a pointless waste of time that was. I feel worse now than I did before I went in. As I said in another post there are still times I feel this bad and this is one of them. Fighting the urge to harm or worse. Still I won't go on.

    Yes Citrus My name does come from Suzzane Vega's song LUKA, http://www.thesite.org/ubb/Forum22/HTML/000070.html this link is a thread which explains most of our names.

    Peace All

    Luka thank u for the poem and Im sorry to hear that thing r bad again. Give your CPN some time. I dreaded mine coming over and I thought she was doin nothing for me, but now I think she aint that bad. Its good to no that somebody will b there to see u if u r really shitty rather than goin it alone (which u dont have to anyway, coz u got us <IMG alt="image" alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif">). Hope things get a bit better though..hang in there!

    Glad to hear u r doin well burnout_girl. If u feel u can why not tell us wat it was like, Im interested to no but its up to u if u dont feel comfortable thats fine <IMG alt="image" alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/wink.gif"&gt;

    I thought I'd read this after you told me about it. It really is a great poem and maybe I should take notice of it cause self esteem is what i don't have!

    Don't take life seriously because you can't come out of it alive
