We all have our off days, but how do you cope with chronic low self-esteem?

Our latest Headstate article could give you some good ideas:

    I have taught myself to recognise the thought processes that lead to me feeling low. I use meditation and breathing exercises to eliminate these thoughts and then everything is cool.

    I also exercise everyday and that puts me in a great frame of mind. When I have a day where I don't exercise I feel like crap.

    I also don't use stimulants like caffeine and try not to eat too much sugary food. I eat lots of fresh veg. I have also heard that fresh fish is great for your brain.

    I feel that a healthy lifestyle tends to help you to prevent depressive thoughts. Also, having a good old moan about things and getting it off your chest can help as long as you don't overdo it <IMG alt="image" alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif"&gt;

    Low self esteem and depression are connected though. Low self esteem is feeling down on yourself and depression is pretty much the same thing.

    When you are the opposite of depressed (happy) you are not really likely to suffer a low self esteem are you?

    Anyway, I practice meditation so that I don't become depressed or have a low self esteem.

    I feel great inside most of the time (usually PMT takes over for a couple of days in the month though!) <IMG alt="image" alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif"&gt;

    I used to have major low self esteem, and it was probably that that led to my self harm/drug abuse/depression/all my shit!!!Its a dangerous thing when u dont feel good about yourself, I found that I took so many risks with my life cause I just didnt care what happened, didnt think I was worth it. Whenever I felt shitty b4 I used to go get high, or go shoplifting, anything dodgy to take my mind off it! Thats y getting pregnant has been the best thing to happen to me, its the only thing that has managed to make me feel life is worth living. I have had every sort of help there was and to no avail, and as far as im concerened this was the only thing that had any hope of working for me (I didnt get pregnant for this reason though). I guess with me I just needed something to make me live for, and this is what done it. Whenevr I feel shit now, I just remember that there is something inside me that is definatly worth being happy for <IMG alt="image" alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif">.

    I used to have very low self esteem, but now I'm fine about myself. I think that lots of people have stages of feeling awful about themselves, it just is that in rare cases this lasts for years instead of a few weeks.

    Maybe problems like low self esteem are caused almost entirely by childhood bullying. You just have to realise that you are who you are. Trying to look like some super model won't make you a happier person.

    Mentally I think its just a case of self exceptance, which is something thatcan take years.

    If you got a self-esteem problem you should talk to someone. As you regular posters know, I took an overdose last month and I used to do solvents and self-harm.
    The truth is, through me being in hospital, I learnt how much my friends and family really cared for me, which helped me a lot and realised how blessed I am.
    My confidence is improving now, if you act confident people see you that way and you'll make more friends. Making friends helps confidence, so I suppose it's the opposite of a vicious circle. Well, that's what I learnt.

    Well said liberty, with the aid of friends, family and healthcare professionals life should not have to be the living hell you and others have had to endure.

    I guess it's kind of ironic that days before my release from hospital I'm allowed limited access to the net and thesite (hooray). Self esteem is something that does need to be high to avoid illnesses like depression, self harm or suicidal tendencies.

    self confidence is important, as one of my therapists said in a group recently one of the biggest cause of a low self esteem is negative talk, saying things like " I'm not good enough to do that" and as he rightly said it has a price to pay for such talk (not the £500 a night hospital fees I retorted quickly) but entering the vicious circle that lady liberty was talking about earlier.

    If there's one thing I'd reccomend is that if you suffer a low self esteem consult your gp, he won't commit you but will atleast put you in contact with support networks that you can help and even teach you techniques that you'll benefit from all you life. And if one person who deserves that, YOU DO !!!.

    Catch you all later
    greetings from the nut house
    Luka

    difficult one that 'the cool group' rnt usually that cool.. u'll probably notice that when u leave school...

    The only way to get round being intelligent, which always comes out as being a know it all n arrogant is to act dumb, not totally dumb but really dumb what u say n do down, do some real stupid things that rnt too obvious

    I used to have really low self esteem. I used to worry what other people thought of me and I always looked to agree with my mates because I didn't like having my own opinion. I then started taking drugs and became a lot more chilled out and didn't give a fuck what people thought. I am now well liked and have recently had a number of girlfriends. Confidence is no longer a problem

    Yeah, I was in the same situation too. I know now all sorts like me, the skaters at college, the sweet girls who always smile at you, even the police, they even keep chasing me (damn I'm popular). I'd rather the girls would chase me around all day but oh well, if you get dealt shit, eat it.
