Anyone know much about video editing?

Right. I took the video off my camcorder, converted to WMV but what I actually wanted to do is have it as Mpeg so that it would work on my DVD player. I've just encoded it to an Mpeg but the quality is shite. Is there anythign I can do to make it the same quaility as it was before or is it just what happens when you convert WMV to Mpeg?

Do Powerdvd and Windvd come in trial versions? I didn't know that, since you tend to get one or the other included with a DVD-ROM/+R-whatever!
