Secondly, (and I think I'm right in saying this - Alistair etc. can correct me), to build up muscle you have to do fewer reps but with a heavier weight, and to tone existing muscle you have to do lots of reps with a constant weight. i.e. it takes a lot of hard work to get really big muscles.
HTH
but my goal is to get bigger arms, i been doing this for about 1 and a half yrs on and off
anyway thanks for your reply

The way I do it is to do so many repetitions with a weight and increase the weight every 2 weeks or so.
Is it true that you should only do weights 3/4 times a week as it gets past a certain point and starts burning away the muscle???
I don't know much, hopefully that fitness pro will reply to you.

any way thanks for bring that to light

Lift weights regularly, I would suggest three or four times a week.
Use enough weight so that you can only do 8-12 repetitions before your muscles quit. Rest, then repeat two to three times.
Drink lots of water, for obvious health reasons, anbd because it helps keep your metabolism running at a constant speed. (If you don't have enough water your body will slow your metabolism down until it gets enough) Your body needs extra water to digest protein as well, more on this later.
Eat more protein. Lifting weights breaks muscle fibers, which then get repaired and replaced with more, hence muscle growth. Your body needs protein to rebuild muscle. A good goal is to eat 90-100 grams of protein a day. It's not really that hard, a tin of tuna is 37 grams for example.
Mix up your exercises. Try doing different types of bicept curls for example. If you do the same thing day after day your body will become very good at doing that one thing and you will make less and less progress.
You probably won't have much luck in getting results if you don't join a gym, the reason is that they have many more ways to do exercises there than you probably have at home.
If you have the discipline and money you could try creatine. It's tough to stick to though, you have to drink ridiculous amounts of water (about a gallon and a half a day) and take it all the time (2-3 times a day). However, it will help you put on muscle more quickly and will make your arms look bigger because it retains water in them. Of course, it will only help if you go to the gym often. Just taking it without working out is a waste of time and money.
Try these exercises:
Chin-ups (same as pull-ups but with the palms of your hands facing you instead of away from you)
Hammer curls: Same as regular dumbbell curls for your arms except with the palms facing in toward your body rather than in front of you. The handles of the dumbbells will be pointing in the direction that you are moving your arms, not perpendicular to the motion. (I hope you're not confused because I didn't really explain this well)
I'll find a link to a site with videos of some stuff and post it here later.
the gym ideas really good, i've got the money just not the time, because i'm at work. i dare say after work could be done and maybe on the weekends
Thanks lexicon for your help, you have given me much food for thought.
as they are now my arms are okay, well i been working on the for awhile off and on so they formed.
i am 18 so its the right ages to push forward more with them. i will see about a gym now. got me thinking
thanks for all your help, if any one else got any handy info for me i'll be well happy if you share.

sorry I took so long but lexicon's been here and pretty much said all anyway
as he said. The only thing I would add is that if you decide to take creatine make sure you know what you are doing first...
Oh and to answer a question, every time you work out you burn muscle (if you measured VERY accuratly your muscles would actually be smaller straight after a workout) the muscle is rebuilt with extra over time after the workout. However, you need to give time for the muscle to rebuild properly inbetween exercise otherwise you can damage them. So, in your case I would recomend keeping the number of "hard" workouts on each muscle to around 3 times a week.
As Lexicon said, eating lots of protein is the ley, allthough DO NOT CUT DOWN ON ANYTHING ELSE, a good balanced diet is essential - eat those veg
Oh and I bet the link Lexicon is going to post is.... *drumroll*

Now I have to go out and find another website with video clips to prove you wrong.
BTW: Tried out that exercise we were talking about...not too bad. Of course it doesn't work them as well as the other exercises but its good for achange of pace. Thanks.
