Can people post the name of their Uni and Name of Halls (if you know it) and what kind of Internet Access You Get And What It Costs

Got back from Uni of Sussex's Campus and hugely shocked to find the international Students residential block didn't seem to have Broadband and only had Dial up internet at 7 pence per minute !! :eek2:

That's an utterly shocking rate to me!!!!

If I was going back to Uni and staying there Internet access is going to be a key selling point for me!! Mean being able to stay in touch with friends and family, as well as making free internet phone calls!!!

I am at Sussex University at the moment and I had to spend £50 on a wireless network card so that I could access the internet from my laptop. And even then... I can't get it in my room, I have to trek outside and go into a special wireless reception area to receive it, which sucks. Even then, the internet only gets a download speed max of 1.5megabytes per second

However, I hear through the grapevine that my accomodation is soon going to be getting wireless internet built onto all the floors, so I can leave all my music and such download. I wouldn't even mind paying £100 just to get the thing in my room, as I run 3 websites and need to use the internet a lot.

But once I do have a net connection in my room, I am going to set up a server using my external HDD and let my Brother and his friends use it to share files easily with

    Come on internet access

But yeah... if you want to use the internet in your room, you do have to pay for a 56k connection at about 7/8 per minute

When I was at Cardiff it was about £80 a year for connection to the network in halls.

I'm at Reading, I think the connection is probably 10mb - its very fast anyway, and its included in the price of the room so you don't really notice any extra charges. And if you have a laptop that has wireless internet connection, you can use it in the bar downstairs and in various cafes etc. round campus.

When I was in edinburgh uni halls I got 100Mbps for free. I.e I didn't have to pay anything on top of the accomodation fees.

Im at Oxford Brookes, and its £2 a week, but p2p is blocked out and you get disconnected and slapped on the wrist if you get caught using it.

Good job I'm not in halls then and have my own broadband to download as much as I like :D

I'm at UCL and have no access in my halls (hence what feels like a prolonged absence!) but if I want to get my laptop hooked up to use within the uni it's £70/year.

7p a minute is a total rip off - I was so shocked at that figure since all the rooms have a telephone already in the Halls he's in.

My cousin emailed me today and says only one Hall in Sussex Uni called Lewws has internet access.

I kinda agree about blocking P2P programmes at uni if it's a free service to everyone, not so sure if you have to pay extra ..

You can get basic Wireless PCMCIA Cards for less then £15 on the net such as from eBuyer. Not sure what you mean by 1.5 Megs per Second ... sounds damn fast to me.

What Halls are you in? Can't remember the name but my cousin is Behind York House I think, his building overlooks a shit load of trees!!

Maybe some students from Lewws can relay the net signal wirelessly to others at the Uni, it's supposed to go 300 Metres, in Hawaii they got wiFi going over 20 miles!!

To me now if I'm going off to a uni ... Internet Access from the bedroom is a must have selling point to me in order to simply keep intouch with everyone back home as well as just entertainment value - as well as for research.

I'm at Edinburgh Uni and my broadband is paid for in the rent of the room so you'd be a knob not to take it. But, again, there's no p2p and I can't even listen to online radio.

Nah, Salisbury Green. I was in Chancellors the other day though doing my washing and got someone to show me round a bit. The rooms aren't actually that great unless you REALLY like en suite and my room was a lot bigger. Where are you?

Aye, the Absorb bar isn't bad at all, spend my sunday afternoons in there doing the washing with a couple of beers :D

I don't think the food's all that bad, the cooked breakfast is appalling though! And I can't say that the six points per meal fills me up either. A girl in my house has managed a tray of 11 or 12 points and bring the odd entire plate of pizza back with her!

A girl down my road put on a stone due to the food in her hall!

I will have to observe what happens to me, not that I can really lose any extra weight. I should get to the gym though.

*grins* how much did she gain afterwards?

No, lboro is good because it has to be to maintain it's sporting reputation. Not that the food is bad for you, just that it's bad.

I kinda agree with the banning of P2P at uni halls if it's all freely provided, the uni doesn't want to get into trouble either and kills the bandwidth for everyone else.

Portsmouth Uni and the cost varies depending on what speed you want, for 512k its £115 a semester which is bloody expensive and as everyone has pointed out p2p is blocked :(

I'm currently using the dial up service which they provide for free but its simply not enough!
