Thatcher had become a liability, and if she had remained as leader they'd have lost the 1992 election. But that, again, was the economy- the cost of the Poll Tax fiasco (£13billion if you were counting) ruined the economic footing of the Tories, and it was only Kinnock's incompetence that ruined it.
The cracks were showing, but then the economy started to fall in the late 1980s, to its depths in 1992/3.
I'm of very mixed opinion about New Labour, to be quite honest, because Tony is so slippery. He's not a social democrat- his first act in power was to cut benefits to lone parents. But then he brings in the New Deal, Sure Start, Minimum Wage Act, Human Rights Act, Freedom of Information Act (even if I wouldn't wipe my arse with it)...all things the right-wing opposed vehemently, and even things that the Socialist's Socialist Clement Atlee didn't bring in.
I wouldn't trust him to tell me the time, but New Labour are still ahead because they have done some good, and all sides can see that because all sides have benefitted.
this labour party have amazed everyone then!
they have actualy made such massive improvements to this country that all sides can see it ...all sides have benefitted!
yet ...people want to vote for something else.
this is the first government in a very long time to have actualy worked for most of the people most of the time.
the first government to pull all of us on board.
we finaly have something thats working then ...and people talk of voting for something else!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
he obviously isn't if you all noticed.
I'm not sure that it was that straight forward.
Yes the economy itself played a part, but as you say when the Tories left office the economy was in pretty good shape.
Public Services, however, were a disgrace and Labour made a big play about this.
Also important were the allegations of "sleaze" within the Tory party, which had effectively undermined public trust.
Basically the tories had failed in a few key areas and the public had lost faith. It wasn't so much that Labour had more to offer, just that they public no longer believe that the tories could govern. Funny, but most elections are lost not won...
Labour's dealings with foreign affairs however can be safely regarded as single most disastrous foreign policy of any government in British history. Blair should at the very least resign for what he's done- there are probably good grounds for actually sending him to trial for war crimes.
Blair, on the hand, has been personally implicated in governmental corruption totalling ten millions of pounds, as has much of his front bench, and he's got away with it. If Blunkett had been Tory he'd have been vilified for what he's been putting where, but New Labour have gotten away with the whole damn lot.
Blair is the worst PM we have ever had- he is a liar, he is corrupt, he is self-serving and he has no redeeming features. His party are better, but only a certified moron would vote for the Scottish cunt that's the alternative.
Once Blair goes I think Labour will lose their way, especially if Brown takes over.
