Jaw problems

I think this is my first ever post in health, let alone topic. I'm not even going to ask for advice but I can't sleep cos I've got a pretty harsh operation tommorow and I thought I may share it with you.

2 years ago after a motorbike crash that almost killed me I had to have some work done on my jaw. It had to be broken and then bone shaved off either side and then all pinned back into place with 8 screws and 2 plates. All done from inside my mouth to avoid any facial scars.

A couple of months ago one of these screws snapped and damaged my jaw bone (after recieving a pretty harsh blow) and came out through my gum. Since then the bone has become infected and pretty painful and now I have to have the infection dealt with.

This is the harsh bit
...tomorrow I am to have a local aneasthetic (sp?) and in an hour long op have these plates unsrewed and removed. I want the op, and realise it need to be done, but I think I'm going to have a problem lying there awake while they cut my mouth up and start unscrewing my jaw. It's not he pain I'm worried about it's the fact I have to watch while they do this.

Is there anyone who could go with you for moral support? Even if they just talked shite to you while it was happening?

Would they let you listen to music? (doubt it but..)

Explain your worries to them and let them calm you with their patronising overtones.

Good luck anyway, fingers crossed for ya

That does sound a bit harsh that they'll keep you awake while they mess around with your jaw.

As you say it's not going to be the pain that's the problem but the actual operation.

I'm sure your surgeon knows what he is doing, so try to relax - close your eyes if that helps.

    Good luck.

    Thanx everyone...

Well I had the op and it wasn't exactly a nice experience but it's done with now. I'm sat here with a severely swollen jaw and a total of 16 stitches in my mouth.

The op lasted only about 30 minutes instead of the hour I'd previously been told. Miss Quoted, they did let me listen to music, some classical stuff which did help a bit.

The worst shit was the fact that I saw the scapel go in and then I could feel this scaping inside my mouth even through the local. Then the crews tarted to be taken out and he pushed my head into the seat so hard it hurt just cos he was pushing on the screwdriver thingy so hard.

I've now got the plates sat in front of me on my desk and I doped up on pain killers. I'm not allowed to smoke or drink or eat solids for 48 hours till the bloods clotted right.

Hopefully it's the end of anymore fucking about with my mouth cos I really hate all this dentist crap.

Maybe they couldn't give you general anaesthetic as it may relax your jaw too much ? hope you pull through quick ! sounds a bit of a nightmare

Don't worry, I havn't had any thing to make me gurn since NYE and I don't plan to until my jaw's all better. And there was this event I wanted to go to this weekend

They wouldn't give me a general cos there's a slight risk of death with any anaesthetic that involves losing consciousness.

I'm not meant to smoke or drink but have been down the pub for a few today cos of the pain. A bit naughty I know.

The swelling is quite bad and so far I've been told I look like Deperate Dan and somone said I look like a hamster.

Thanx to everone wishing me well. I'd smile if I could.
