how do you convert .gifs and other pictures to .jpegs?

    open and save as. then change the file type in the drop down menu.

    I think that the browser will only offer to save an image either in the original format or BMP. So you can save GIF->BMP and JPG->BMP but not GIF->JPG.

    To achieve this, you need something like Paintshop Pro. It recognises around 30 image types.

    just wanna shrink some avs so they fit and still look half decent (60x60 is a bag of wank). will this irfanview thing help me out?

    Yeah, sure. There's a "resize" option in the Image menu, you just put 60 and check the "preserve aspect ratio" box.
    I use it for avatars too.
