hi...
i've seen you about this board and i just had a few questions. you work as a personal trainer? or in a lesiure centre? i was wondering how you got there? how old are you (if i may be so rude as to ask!)? do you enjoy it? what does it entail? i would like to go into the same sort of thing...what qualifications do you need?

I don't actually work as a personal trainer (I am at college at the mo..) but at college during the games sessions when in the gym I help people with their workouts - suggestions for exercises, supervision, spotting etc. As for my qualifications a quick copy and paste is in order (can't be bothered to type it out again )
At the moment I am a qualified Volleyball Coach and Referee. I am also a 2 star qualified kayaker. At the moment I am working on logging time to go towards my 3 star kayak, 2 Star Kayak Coach, ML (Mountain Leader - qualifies me for Mountain Guiding), SPA (Single Pitch Award - Climbing instructor), Gym and Fitness Instructor, Lifeguard and First Aider. Unfortunatly for almost all these I need to be 18 before I can attend the formal training and evaluation so at the moment I have to focus on logging the time by helping instruct people.
I can't wait till March when I am 18, and I can register and finish of all the qualifications. (it's gonna be a busy gap year)
How old are you? What subjects are you studying? As I am doing sports science A-level this naturaly helps in this area for me. If you haven't done A-levels yet you may wish to do that subject. Also carrying it on at University would be a good idea, and not all universities require sports science A-level to get in. Once you are 18 (if you aren't already) you should look at doing something like the Gym and Fitness instructor award with the YMCA or a similair qualification. Then probably try and get work experience at a gym, just supervising and so on. And finally when you think you know enough set out to be a personal trainer!
Ultimatly I am to work freelance as a computer consultant 3 days or so a week, and spend the other days coaching outdoor sports or leading mountaineering/ kayaking trips.
Blondechick - Tell us about yourself, how old are you? What sports do you like? How often do you train?
Alistair
thanks for the info though. you know a lot... you seem really sorted in what you want to do. i wsh i had been like that a couple of years ago!!! Journalism, nursing, dietician... ugh, the confusion!
too much to think about ad not enough time! isnt that always the way!!!
I have yet to work out exactly how I can do all those courses and work to earn money during the gap year. Originally I was going to get a proper job and fit the courses round it, but that isn't going to work, so I guess it will be part time work. Although I saw quite a nice job at the beeb working on their website that wascontract (for half a year) something like that would be nice....
