What should I be downloading/uploading on a 1mb ADSL line?

Someone said it should be 934 K/s download and 242 K/s upload.

Put a decimal point somewhere in there and that sounds about right.

    I get ~ 45k/sec from 512.

if you are on true 1mbit (1024kbp/s) then your maximum download speed is 128 kb/s, im on NTL 1mbit and i normally get about 122 kb/s.

If you have 256 kbp/s upload then your upload speed will normally be about 30kb/s

    i hope this has helped.

Just divide your connection speed by 8.

That should be about accurate, but it also depends on contention ratios and local usage.

On a 512k line, you should be getting 64k by the way.

I don't know how you work that out.

You wont ever get the total possible maximum anyway, there's always overhead.

I'm not sure what you mean.

Connection speed is in bits not bytes, and there are 8 bits to a byte. Hence a 56kbps should run at 7KB/s.

And if you were meaning something else, that explains it for anyone else

On NTL 600, I was getting 78kb/s. When it recently upgraded to 750, I now get 92kb/s.

the 600/700 bit might be referring to product code rather than alledged speeds

    ive never liked NTL

You are on ADSL which will have a contention ratio usually 50:1 which means you share your local exchange with 50 people therefore if they all downloading massivly as you are then your speed will decrease.
    Thats probably the cause!

I had 1mb with a 50:1 and no one in my area used ADSL needless to say me speeds were good.

I dont understand why they limit it why not just say all you 50 people have 40mb between ya when no ones using it ull get full 40mbps

    if only lol

i dont think you realise even after all the times its been mentioned,

you can have the fastest link in the world, but if the computer you are downloading your data from has a shit connection then you will download slow

ive been downloading a 900 meg file for weeks now and i have 512k broadband, its all because the computer im getting it off is on dialup

if your friend lives more than a mile or two away theres a good chance he is on a different local exchange

That depends on how many exchanges are in the area. The exchange I'm on does everything within a 20 mile radius. Thats a lot of ground to cover.
