OK so a mate of mine saw a film (Battle Royale) and he started to write about it but using names of people in our year. He got tired of it and I asked if I could carry it on. So now it's gone from a paragraph to 10 pages and I've hardly even started. Thing is, it's pretty damn good and I was wondering, in the slight off-chance I try to get it published, would I be sued by the makers?

I've never seen the film so the stuff I've written (helped along by certain people) is kinda going half in the way of what the people who have seen the film and half my own ideas and what I want to happen so it's not as if I'm 100% copying the film.

there's such a thing as intellectual property, and it's very dodgy ground.

the other very dodgy thing is using the names of real people, presumably without their permission.

i'd say the combination of these two things are almost certainly asking for a lawsuit, were it ever to get published, which it almost certainly wouldn't, as it's not in a publishers interests to produce a work which would endanger their reputation.

added to the fact that films don't get published in the way that books do. they get made, or they don't get made.

It probably depends on what you mean by published. If you go for the Waterstones Hardback book and everyone you know reads and doesnt like it, things might be bad. But books are a bit different from everything else when it comes to copyright. You'd definitely be safe on http://www.fictionpress.com though. (good website)

Quite probably, they were scrubbers. One of them slept with her work experience boss on the stairs of the office.

On the stairs? That's got to be uncomfortable.
