Why are they called cocktails? What does a cock and a tail have to do with mixed drinks in a glass?

That's just the name for them, that's like asking why is cannabis called cannabis?

In an effort to be helpful, I found this:

"Legend has it that the word ‘cocktail’ was coined by Elizabethan pirates who, in the Caribbean, were treated to fiery drinks mixed with the root of a plant called cola de gallo (cock’s tail).

Some believe, an Irish innkeeper in America, Betsy Flanagan, invented the cocktail. She created exciting mixtures of drinks, which she served from bottles decorated with the tail feathers of roosters. A French customer, impressed by the delightful taste, raised his glass to toast and declared ‘Viva le cocktail’, giving the mixed drink its name."

But then I looked some more and found this:

So it looks like nobody knows... ;)
