Tests

Hi, I was worried I had got a vaginal infection, so I dutifully booked an appointment at my GPs and went along. She took some swabs to be sent off and told me to phone back in ten days for the results, and that if any were positive, I'd have to make another appointment to discuss treatment etc.
The problem is that the tenth day is this Friday, and I'm going on holiday Friday afternoon. I'm really worried that they'll come back positive and it'll be too late to get an appointment (although to be honest, in our area, it probably is already too late to get one).
Do you think I should book an appointment anyway, then cancel it if everything's fine; phone up a few days early to see if the results are in (she said ABOUT 10 days) and then try to get an appointment; or resign myself to worrying over my holiday what the positive result was for (it could be thrush or something pretty easy and harmless or chlamydia and fertility destroying!).
Any advice?

Hmm, a difficult one. I would phone the surgery and explain the situation, just be honest, it might be a bit embaressing, but well it will be worth it.

Try and get your doctor to ring you so you can have a chat with him/her.

And book an appointment for Friday.

Are you going somewhere you could get prescriptions if you had a script?

Are you sure the doctor said phone for the results ? Its just my surgery wont give results over the phone, we have to actually go to the surgery to get the results.
Id personally book an appointment in advance.

That's not a bad idea, they usually have female receptionists as well, and I guess I wouldn't need to explain exactly what the tests were for anyway...
I'm going to Corfu, so I dunno about prescriptions there? I'd probably rather wait til I got back to make sure I've got the right stuff and that the information was written in English anyway.
Really hoping it's not going to require antibiotics so I don't have to explain to my puzzled parents why I'm refusing all alcohol!

The doctor said to phone, and if they were negative they'd just tell me there was no need for an appointment, but if any were positive I'd have to come in to be told which ones etc.
    Off to phone surgery now.
    Thanks

OK, just took BongBuddha's advice, and midway through explaining she said that the results had already come, and were normal.
So panic over, and dilemma solved!
    Thanks guys

I am always told to phone for my results, but then all of mine have come back clean so I'm not sure what they would do if I'd caught polio or something.

They would tell you to make an appointment to discuss the results with the GP.

Working in a GPs surgery is hard because people don't realise we aren't clinically qualified to tell them anything more than 'test results are fine' or 'make an appointment'.

Oh ok, well all my tests came back clean, even the one for 'cat scratch fever' which the specialist thought I probably had.
