I know this is in the wrong forum but I need a quick answer...

is there a certain type of anti-virus software that won't let you log on to msn messenger for ages once you're online?

Yeah, but do you know if there is an anti-virus package that spends ages checking msn messenger before allowing someone to sign on?

Your firewall most likely doesn't have anything to do with it. Sometimes when the MSN servers are a bit fucked, it won't allow you to sign on, and tells you that its your firewall's fault. Its 99% just MSN being a bit fucked and not your firewall :)
