Venus In Transit. Tomorrow Morning.

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
For the first time in 122 years, You will be able to witness Venus crossing the path of the sun during tomorrow morning. This is quite a rare cosmic event. I dont think I can explain it well, so here is a link for the science stuff. Basically though between about 5 am and 11 am tomorrow you will be able to see Venus casting its shadow on the sun. I will be getting up around 9 to watch some of it before i go to revise.

Edited to add: This event is happening on the morning of Tuesday the 8th

Venus is a big thing though, although he did manage to squeeze my sofa into it when I moved house, so ya never know :thumb:

What's the safest way to look at it? Without going blind, I mean.

get a thick piece of paper, poke a hole with a pin,as little as possible, then take another one and place it below, use the top sheet and move it till it projects on the lower sheet,do not look at the sun though

I did not manage to see it personally. I will have to wait until 2012 now. :(

Me and some friends watched it in college. We used a different method though. I got about 6 strips of negatives, taped them together and used that. They are extremely dark, and the silver coating reflects off all of the rays.
