Marriage...What Do You Think?

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru

*whips out her statistics*

I had a good trawl around and found these bits of information. Very interesting stuff!
• 76% of couples get married for non-religious reasons i.e. they want to make the commitment, but it has nothing to do with marriage's original reasons.
• Of the remaining 24%, 10% are 'on the fence' i.e. they think the religious aspects are important, but they also get married for the 'normal' reasons.
• A whopping 97% of young people today have sex before the age of 20, and a following 1.4% have sex before the age of 25.
• Approximately 68% of cohabiting couples go on to get married.
• Recent figures show that England's divorce rate is 42%.
• America's divorce rate (obviously varies in different states but) overall is apparantly 50%. As good a chance as flipping a coin.
• America has the world's highest divorce rate, twice as high as second-place Sweden.
• In England, an average of 31% of women confess to having sex with another person while married, 21% of them list their marriage as unhappy. 43% have sexual contact with another person, two thirds of them regret it.
• 39% of men have sex with another person while married, and just 17% of them say their marriage is unhappy. 46% have had sexual contact with another person, and 27% of them regret it.

Get this:
• 85% of married men who have affairs (not just a one-night stand) will not leave their wives! Bear in mind that 58% of them will have promised their lovers that they will leave.
• 71% of married women who have affairs won't leave their husbands, despite 38% promising to at some point.
• Men aged 35-50 are 67% more likely to have an affair while married than 19-34 year-olds. However, 19-34 year-olds are 73% more likely to have an affair while involved in a long-term relationship than men aged 35-50 in a similar position.
• Wives are more likely to stay with their husband after his affair, than vice versa.
• On a rating of 1-10 (10 being fantastic) the average happily married man lists sex with his wife as 8. The average happily married woman lists sex with her husband as 6!
• The most popular thing married men would change about their (marital) sex life would be their wife wanting to try 'new things'! Women, on the other hand, want their hubbys to last longer in bed!
• 50% of faithful women who aren't sexually satisfied in their marriage, say that they have a happy relationship and a good marriage. 43% of men in the same position agree.
• 76% of female divorcés remarry. 64% of male divorcés tie the knot again. 27% of couples who divorce will remarry each other.
• 96% of people getting married believe that their marriage will last forever. The remaining 4% must either be drunk or golddigging! Tut tut.

What do you think then? Some bits are rather surprising.

NB: I obtained these statistics from various sources on the Internet. I'm sure they're more or less accurate. If anyone has any queries, say so!

helly....????? how is this gonna work? you're gonna basically have a fake wedding? i dont understand this at all. you're gonna pay for all the wedding for no apparent reason, not as a committment or a way of demonstrating your love, but just for the fun of it? hmmmm.

chica, if the divorce rate in america is 50%, and sweden is in second place with half that, 25%.. where does britain fit into it all with 42%?

but on the whole they're interesting. havent got time to say anything more about that!!

*lol* Almost certainly my crappy maths!! Excuse-moi

The English divorce rate is the accurate one, reported figures range from 40% to 45% over the last few years. The Sweden one is me pushing the wrong buttons on my calculator!

You old cynic! I'm a little confused about that one

I do agree with marriage but not the way people just dive into it these days. (I sound about 80 I know). There's no point in getting married if you're just going to divorce. You may as well just live together and save yourself the legal expenses.

I would get married but I couldn't take some of the religious vows, like promising to bring up any children in the Christian faith. If I do get married it will probably be in a registry office no big deal - I think big white weddings are a waste of money. I mean sure they're romantic but I just couldn't spend so much money on one and it would be so much hassle to organise. I would get married if I'd been living with someone for at least a year and wanted to stay with them the rest of my life. I take relationships very seriously (maybe why I haven't had many!)

Anyway, my timer's gone I hate being completely dictated to by my parents. Can't wait to marry and get away from it all!!

White weddings don't have to cost a fortune. My aunt made my dress, my ex mother in law made the bridesmaids dresses, my uncle made the cake, a friend was the photographer, another friend got her father to drive us in his white mercedes, grandma-in-law paid for the flowers, the reception was at my mum's house, we bought a barrel of beer, mum's neighbours did the catering & the whole lot (including the honeymoon) set us back a monkey.

I know, I found a load of last year's lists, Squee. Unfortunately there are many 'accuarate' ones like that online and most of them differ to the last. Many *aren't* from the year they claim, but a mixture of a few years back. Better to search around for a sensible average, as not all stats are accurate at all

I suppose my maths doesn't help either

It's hard to do that kinda stats, cause countries got differently good Statistics woteva. So you probably need to go a bit backwards to find divorce stats that apply to the same year everywhere.
I just don't get how they got those percentages about the US and Sweden...

Don't know, but I've seen it on numerous TV shows recently, and hoards of websites and stats lists that the U.S. divorce rate is 50%. I'm told now that Sweden is roughly the same as Finland!
