Something for those who think prison is too easy

Prison infested with rats, drugs and mould.

If prison is such an easy place to go, and if prisoners are spolit rotten whilst inside, why does this prison have 135 things wrong wioth it, including, but not limited to smashed and missing windows, a rat infestation and mouldy and disgusting toilets and showers?

Damn it's some holiday camp!

Of course this is just one prison... isn't it? Actually that's pretty pitiful. But then some prisons are a holiday camp, televisions, snooker, gyms if you look at it in the light of leisure. Maybe the inmates should be left to wallow in guilt.

However wallowing in rat turd is going a bit too far health-wise.

    Why not?

Prison should be more about rehabilitation than anything else. I have mates that have spent time in Wichcester and been on remand in Reading and believe me it's not as easy as you think easy.

One of my mates spent time in Winchester for causing death by dagerous driving and got 3 years. After only 6 months he's moved to an open prison but he's also become a qualified welder and is working during the day as a fitter just across the raod fromt he prison. He can play pool and watch TV but he still hasn't got his freedom, and at night he's locked up with some very nasty people. He's told me some seriously scary stries of hios time in Winchester.

ARMLEY JAIL in leeds serious ant infestation for over a hundred years. the ants are in your bed, water, food. they have tried everything but the ants still infest the place.
ARMLEY JAIL ...in winter sheets of ice form on the walls of a lot of the cells ...three to a cell 23 hrs a day ice or no ice.
ARMLEY JAIL serious mouse infestation. they climb the walls right up to the third floor cell windows and come in the cells at night. they aren't even windows ,,,they are arrow slots 3ft thick so that no daylight ever comes into the cell.
STRANGEWAYS manchester. cockroaches ...ants ...clicking beetles ...rats ...three to a cell 23 hrs a day.
PRESTON JAIL...three to a cell ...beetles roaches and rats.
there are very few soft jails in this country. i pray none of you have to find out the truth for yourselves ...

We as a society need to re-examine methods of 'punishing' criminals!

Is it JUST to PUNISH someone in a jail?! What if they don't learn from their experience and commit MORE CRIME after they're released?!

That's why I dislike prisons. There NEEDS to be an alternative!

You are telling us that these prisons are in such a state so why do some people keep re-offending ? If it was that bad then surely they would not want to go back ?

Not all offenders are drug addicts, alcoholics. Lets forget about these people, im talking offenders who re-offend for different reasons. The people who steal cars, driving offences etc etc

If you have to go to jail, then it's a dirty place for you...it's your punishment.

Dirty to a point where it borders on being inhumane?

    How can you justify that?

A prison is full of people who have commited different crimes. One could be there for murder, one could be there for growing weed. They are all subjected to filty environments. Justification?

No matter what crime a person has committed, you can never justify treating them inhumanely. It's a breach of their human rights.

dung.gifSo what about the "human rights" of their victims? I think burglars and violent criminals should be given hard labour instead of TVs and Playstations.

becky ...why do people keep going back? tough one that. some cos they are stupid. some cos they are pretty useless. some cos they have mental problems. some cos they just don't give a shit.
the stupid ones are those who, despite nearly always being caught ...still think they are going to get away with it.
a huge number of british jails are and always have been ...unfit for human habitation.
we have had this discussion so many times before ...the continental jails are extremely cushy yet reoffending is far lower than here where you basicaly live in a dungeon.
WYMOTT ...which i mentioned before is super modern with lots of leisure and freedom within it's fences ...but it is hell on earth with all it's tellys and snooker rooms.

Its just so hard to understand why this is, its also even harder for me to inderstand when someone has been inside they can on release go back to crime and get sent straight back, especially when you mention them conditions.

I just cant get my head round it.

So lets assume we have these cushy prisons, what else do they do abroad ? it cant just be the cushy prisons they must be doing much more like maybe councelling or having trained people there to dig deeper and get to the real root of the problem.

Just reading another thread and it got this brain of mine ticking ;)
anyway lets assume repeat offenders have never really grown up, they actually think like a child.
Like me I have this thing where i lack confidence which in turn makes me think I cant do something, so if im trying to do something and i cant get it to work instead of keep trying I give up.
So a constant offender doesent feel good about themselves, they think they will never get a job, they cant learn mathematics, they cant keep a girlfriend so whats the point in keeping on the straight and narrow cos you will only lose it anyway.
So if in prison they start to show them they are worthy, they can do stuff and praise the good behaviour and reward them then maybe it could get these prisoners to beleive in themselves.

    What you reckon ?

in italian jails you earn propper wages for working in huge prison factories ...but you only get a small ammount of the money ...about a tenner a week for toiletries and baccy. the rest is banked for you so ...if your doing a year say ...you leave with quite a tidy lump sum. enough to get a flat upon release with money to spare. no excuse to go robbing.
in the uk you leave with one weeks social security but cannot claim any for two weeks after release which puts a lot of pressure on the con to reoffend.
in holland they have big education programmes and councelling ...have the wife in special cabins to stay over for the weekend once a month ...but only as a reward for good behaviour.
why the uk is like it is i don't know.

My alternative to prisons would be an emphasis on REHABILITATION!

Convicts should perhaps PAY reparations to whom they attacked.

Also, legalising silly laws like drug possession would free the jails.

It's inhumane to allow HUMAN BEINGS to be subjected to rape in jail!
