I heard in Glasgow Uni, if you go to thier library, and bring the book to the Union, they like, print the book off for you for like £7! Try Borders..they'll have a student discount day soon! Ask around for something like the printing book bit, etc.

Sorry, I dunno much about uni books, but college books are just as expensive :|

Yeah, I think you probaby will need at least some new books for every semester.

Can you not just buy the key texts and then get the others from the library for a bit? Thats what my lecture's are suggesting.

Get student deals and raid the second hand shops. Or make friends with the people in the year above.

You will new books for every module and most uni's have different modules in each semester........

Only get the books you really, need. Probably only 1 book for each module.

Look out for people from the years above selling their books.

Check the library to see how many copies they have and what length of time you can hire for....

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm doing Politics and I've spent £200 on books. This is mainly due to the way my course is structured. I do six modules, half of which I'm doing in economics so basically I had to buy the core texts for economics and politics and then I limited myself to one book for each module - I ended up with 15 books and have spent £200!

Also because I'm doing Politics although I've got the most up-to-date books a fair amount of it is out of date now (so there's little chance of me being able to buy second hand) because politics changes so quickly so I just hope I can get away with new books every year.

TBH You have to kind of expect spending loads on books because they're bigger, harder to get hold of and specialised. Not much of a comfort I know but there you go. Just wanted to say you're not alone! :)

You probably will need new books each semester. Your lecturers will tell you which ones are most important that you have to buy. All books should be available in the library though.

Keep an eye out in the union and your buildings for second years selling their books on. Usually they'll have had to have the same set books as you do so thats a cheap way to get hold of some.

Plus some bookshops have special arrangements with universities that they'll sell certain texts at discounted rates to students.

    thanks
i've spend £130 so far and have 3! books.i've been looking out for second hand books but all ive seen is notices for biochem books.looks like a talking nicely to my parents. :D
i did expect a huge bill for books but not quite this bad. i haven't got to the library yet but i know the ratio of books to students is 25:1 so i think they'll be stiff competion for books, plus every lecturer refers to the libray as "short loan" so i'm guessing i can't get them for long.
i'll be gettin books for xmas at this rate!
    thanks again.

Ouch.....have you tried looking online if you can get them any cheaper?

I thought £28 for one of mine was damn expensive.

Thankfully i've got a flat mate who has the same first year as me so we're sharing books.

£28 ain't to bad, the Econometrics book I am going to buy tomorrow costs £38.......

Try getting books between a group of you from a tutorial for example, split the cost 4 ways..........

I haven't got any books yet and I've only been told to get two out of a massive book list. Roll on Maths, no books to read!

    Bopz

It is when you see the size of this book...it's tiny.

Have you tried going to somewhere like amazon.co.uk? They nearly always sell books cheaper than in the shops and second-hand books are even less! :)

Or you could use the library...:D
