jobs with pink hair?

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
i really need a job.

i also really want to dye my hair pink again. i've been keeping it blonde all summer so as not to impede my employment options.

i was just wondering if there is anyone who'd employ me with pink hair?

no-one should discriminate against you for having pink hair. that'd be like, hair-ist.

or you could claim yourself to be a minority group and get in on positive discrimination ;)

Can I just say, personally, as a customer, if I walked into somewhere like a shop and saw a member of staff with pink hair, it'd make me smile and be good talking point. BTW I LOVE pink hair, it rules :D

    :D i love it too.

i used to work in free spirit (skatey-type outdoorsy shop) when i had pink hair, and everyone commented on it.

especially the old people. i'd get comments like 'well, how colourful! you certainly cheered me up'.

i personally think that the way i keep my hair (neat, clean, pink) looks a lot neater and smarter than those people who have messy, greasy natural hair colours.. and it's not like i have piercings through my eyeballs or anything....

    i will keep looking.

It all depends on the job you are going for, some demand a dress code and, sadly for you, this includes hair colour.

I was once sacked, on my first day, for turning up woth an earring. I was asked to remove it, but as I had only had it done a few days previously, that wasn't an option. So I was sacked on the spot. Naturally I looked into things from a legal perspective and the only way I could have challenged things was if I could show discrimination.

in my year out before uni, i was a restaurant manageress in a snooty hotel. if i had a number of candidates for a waiting job, and one had pink hair, i'd have to choose one of the others. sadly its not a case of unfair dismissal; in a lot of jobs you'd be disregarded when you walked into the interview even if you were perfect for the job. i was under pressure by the general manager, a very snooty old cow, and im afraid a lot of managers would be in the same position. now im at uni however i can have my hair as i like (pillarbox red) and i think if you want to get a job badly enough you will, try alternative shops, piercing places, cyberdog etc..you'll be an asset! Or just dye the tips and tie up your hair when you go for an interview.

it's not a case of wanting a job. it's a case of needing to pay off my very substantial overdraft.

there is ONE alternative-type shop where i live. and i already asked. however, if i take in some samples of the clothes i make she might sell them through the shop... then i would be able to have my beeyodiful pink hair back. if i can make enough money selling my clothes i wouldn't need a job...

and my hair is not long enough to tie up :p

the lush in newcastle has a girl with pink hair working there so i'm sure the shop in leeds wouldn't mind.

also places like bookshops tend not to mind so much, and music shops like hmv and virgin.

i was looking in wakey, but if i get desperate enough, i'll consider leeds. just don't want all my hard-earned cash disappearing into travel expenses...

i may have to wait until all the students leave their summer jobs... there's always loads available mid september. and i've got a 2 day week this coming semester.

They shouldn't, but some people inevitably will. It wont necessarily be the case that they would say "we're not giving you the job because you have pink hair", either.

    heh. you are a genius.

my boyfriend just cycled past HMV on his way to work and has sent me a text saying they've put up a sign for christmas temps.

temp job = better than no job.

so i'll go in when the shops open and smile sweetly at them.

    thanks for the suggestion. :D

If you wait until you have a job before dying your hair then I am pretty sure most places can't do anything about it.

My contract states that extremes of hair colour are not acceptable and will result in action being taken. However I later learned that they stole the employment policy from the main NHS one, and I have bright red hair anyway, and my boss loves it.

Why don't you sell your clothes on the internet?

or setup a little eBay shop?

I'me sure if your designs are good they'll find a market.

I've known people that buy clothes from all over the world on eBay.

Yeah I worked in a virgin megastore for a while and they really didn't mind about that sort of thing, my manager had loads of piercings and stuff. I think they may even like to employ young people who stand out in some way, appeals more to their market.
