Netflix's Adolescence - What are your thoughts?

Hey everyone!

Has anyone watched Adolescence? It's a fairly new British crime-drama mini-series on Netflix that explores themes of violence, social media and toxic masculinity. I have just finished watching it and I found it really powerful and thought provoking!

Well, over on the Mix's social media platforms they've been asking some questions about what peoples thought and feelings are on the show. It would be great to get our Community involved and hear some of your thoughts on these questions, as well as maybe to create a space to discuss any thoughts, feelings, concerns or questions you may have around the topics discussed in 'Adolescence'.

3. well i dont want to spoil anyone but on one episode jamie gets really angry towards the psychologist and that really concerned me. he said something along the lines of "you do not tell me to sit down". i dont know if jamie will rehabilitate or not because of his past actions but hes also a really complex character.

1) I haven't watched Adolescene as I haven't got netflixbut I've seen clips of it online like social media as well as on Googlebox they discussed it there and it seems like a very important show to have been made in this time. It definitely is the zeitgiest of what is going on right now (this means its very current basically, love using my media terms x)

2) For me eventhough I haven't watched the show so I dont understand the main themes of the show, I think exploring toxic masculinity and talking about it more is so important as well as misogny as well as how it can affect anyone eventhough this is common among young boys. Especially with influencers such as Andrew Tate etc having a huge social media prescene specifically amongst the younger generation. Also, more focus on texting and text language such as blue pill and red bill. Maybe also talking about radicalisation in young people could be beneficial because I find that sometimes social media can tend to show you content you woulden't generally seen unless you really search for it such as videos like Andrew Tate for example.

3) Again I haven't seen the show but it has made me feel more aware about how content can affect younger people specifically males as well because I know there has been a huge stigma around masculinity specifically toxic masculinity and the whole concept that men have to be strong when this isn't actually 100% true. On Googlebox they did show the scene between the main character and the therapist/psychologist and it did shock me quite a bit because of how Jamie behaved towards her as well. I know a lot of people have been talking about how he gets given like half a sandwich and its supposed to be a metaphor for him and her sharing things together ish as she tries to learn more about him and his perspective.

2. I think it would have been interesting to see more evidence of Jamie's journey from simply seeing these messages online and him saying himself that he doesn't really agree with it, but slowly having it influence his behaviour. I think it could be super important to know what to look out for in terms of changes in people's behaviour and so young men may even be able to recognise it in themselves!
3. I think it raises a lot of questions about what can actually be done about this? We know it's rising, but what does everyone here think could be done to help reduce this toxic masculinity going around? Also considering this shows demographic isn't necessarily going to be the young males this show is primarily talking about!

Yeah I mostly watch a lot of video essays sometimes on shows and also normally I use a lot of social media and its been talked about online and I have read articles on the show because I was interested in the themes which are important and need to be talked about. I think for me the content i've seen around has made me feel like im glad its being talked about more now especially among younger people especially men but this doesn't have to be for men either and this topic can be gender neutral too!. Radicalsation is a very big thing online mostly from particular influencers as well, it mostly affects young people who are vulnerable. I think its important this show was created because its definitely of its time and its very topical for today as well. If I do get netflix I will watch it properly because I think its definitely interesting to see that development throughout the episodes.
