Applying to volunteer

KBee99KBee99 Posts: 62 Boards Initiate
So after finishing uni, I have been struggling for over a year to gain employment and ever since I joined the Mix I have really enjoyed volunteering. It has inspired me to take on more voluntary roles and I’m due to start befriending soon and also helping out at a support group! I’m looking forward to starting these roles and giving back to the community. Does anyone have any tips if they have maybe volunteered in anything similar before? :)

@KBee99 I've also really enjoyed volunteering at the mix! I've never done befriending per se, but I have been on the other end as I received support from befriend a child, and I got a lot from it before the sessions ceased. I currently volunteer at a local community organisation that has set up a public living room, which is a safe space for people to come and relax, socialise, and have some food. The main organisation that coined the idea of the community living room in the UK is camerados if you want to find out more. It's been really rewarding.

I don't really have much tips to offer but the skills I use on here I've found to be extremely transferrable so it will definitely put you in a good position for various opportunities in the future - including volunteering.

Hello @lunarcat522 happy to hear you had a positive experience of receiving support from befriending, I hope I can offer the same service! That sounds like a really good service, I will look into it :)

Yeah, I have not been volunteering on here for long but I have learned so much already!

Hey @KBee99, it's great to hear that you've enjoyed volunteering and looking to do more roles! It's really fulfilling to serve others in this way; and career-wise, it does give you some valuable experience and shows that you have wider interests.

I'd agree with what @lunarcat522 says - these roles can give some great opportunities to develop skills. One key one in the ones you mention is communication - both in listening and speaking.

I'd also say, take it easy on yourself. It can take some time to get used to a role and its rhythms, so if it takes you a little time to learn how things work, that's okay :) Lean on the other staff for advice and support, and they'll help you to become better at what you do too. Time in the role makes a big difference, and you'll become better as you go - trust the process!

    Hello @Azziman

Yes definitely it is completely different I have ever done before but I am looking forward to moving out of my comfort zone and trying new things out!

Heya @KBee99 just adding a little bit onto this thread as i do a lot of volunteering and do a few befriending roles. Its always good to just chat generally if your nervous ie about the weather, week plans how there day has been and normally a convo can spring off that. Some weeks the person might not want to chat as much and i think its really important not to take it personally they might just not be feeling like it and thats ok. Mabye also make some brief mental notes or notes if its the same person you are going to be talking to every week as it can help you to remember what things they are interested in.
I hope you enjoy it and do let us know how u r getting on im sure you will do great <3

hi @KBee99 I love volunteering so much, glad you've caught the bug for it too! I've been a unit leader at Girlguiding for the past couple of years and it's been so rewarding to see the kids grow. If you're enjoying supporting young people via The Mix then Girlguiding is always looking for volunteers! And I've made some really close friends from my fellow leaders so would recommend to anyone!
